    I think this will be enough to build an offline installer for a standard developer :g:
    No mobile stuff (xamarin, android), no gaming, no unity, no Universal Platform, no Azure.
    Just C#, VisualBasic, ASP, C++, Linux Cross building.

    Order:
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.CoreEditor
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop --recommended -- optional
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NetWeb --recommended -- optional
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop --recommended -- optional
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeCrossPlat

    Downloading first 3 ---> 1.86GB
    Adding the Native Desktop and CrossPlat (C++) ---> adds 4GB

    Command line:
    Code:
    * C#, Visual Basic
    vs_Enterprise.exe --layout "E:\Visual Studio 2017.1\enterprise" --lang en-US --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.CoreEditor;includeOptional;includeRecommended
    vs_Enterprise.exe --layout "E:\Visual Studio 2017.1\enterprise" --lang en-US --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop;includeOptional;includeRecommended

    * ASP, Web Development
    vs_Enterprise.exe --layout "E:\Visual Studio 2017.1\enterprise" --lang en-US --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NetWeb;includeOptional;includeRecommended

    * C++ and linux cross C++
    vs_Enterprise.exe --layout "E:\Visual Studio 2017.1\enterprise" --lang en-US --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop;includeOptional;includeRecommended
    vs_Enterprise.exe --layout "E:\Visual Studio 2017.1\enterprise" --lang en-US --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeCrossPlat;includeOptional;includeRecommended

    To update the software you must run the same commands.

    Installing from the offline installation folder
    Run your offline installation now or later; the choice is yours to make. But when you do, follow these steps.
    1.Install the certificates (They are in the Certificates folder, which is in your Layout folder. Simply right-click each one to install it.)
    2.Run the installation file. For example, run:
    c:\vs2017offline\vs_enterprise.exe
    (The file inside the downloaded folder)

    I think we have discovered the real reason M$ did not want to release some 25gb ISO's if they are going to change this frequently lol

    I just had this error of not being able to run the installer. Gave me headache for a few days for why I could not run it or update the existing installation.
    Using procdump I was able to determine that somehow the MSI Afterburner OSD interferes with the installer and causes crashes of the installer.
    Closing Afterburner solved this.

    After I was released VS 2017 so far only approximately 5 updates made, it seems every month dozens will be expected... Fix, fix, fix :)

    This is why I never bothered with any development/maintenance of any software and stuck with OS/Software installation/update/upgrade. On mainframe, you even had access to source code. Probably explains why many mainframers went to Linux.

    Disclaimer - I have dabbled in VS, but avoided dotNET part.

    I guess like their Office & Windows it seems to be a "rolling release" as they keep fixing things.
