Could be your power supply or a battery backup system with a dead battery.

@ElDiabl0: It could be. It might be a combination of a few things, as the system is very old.

The CPU might be overheating because the thermal paste dried out. The power supply may be on its' way out.
The combination of the both may be causing the system to shut down.

It could be pretty much anything: faulty PSU, loose connection, bad motherboard, bad surge protector, a short circuit in some PSU cable, dried out thermal paste, clogged vents … a whole world of things could possibly go wrong. It could even be the house circuit the computer is plugged into. If another high current draw device on that circuit causes a power droop, that might have a negative effect on aged parts. It’s very easy to say what it could be; very hard to pin down what it actually is for intermittent problems. But with all these comments, if the OP does fix it (how will he ever know for sure?) I hope he comes back and tells us.

Had a similar issue with this D630.
got a new aftermarket battery, it didn't consistently contact with all it's pins
the p/s connector was so loose it kept falling out
when the pins lost contact and the p/s cable fell out---no power crash
