Just purchased a Dell Poweredge T300 at a bargain price, and upgraded BIOS to latest version, i.e. 1.5.2. I thought then: okay, since Dell added support for Windows 2008 R2, there should be SLIC 2.1 table ...

Installed W2k8, cert, set lic. key, and registered (with -ato command) and ... licence failed  WTF ???

extracted BIOS from exe provided by Dell, qot a .BIN and a .HDR. And how to repack, was a nice question ... without any answer!

Then, just read this thread, using asset utility to set an asset tag at PASS:12/31. ... :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

True, messages are a bit frightening, but it works!

In this server, unlike old Dells (GX520/620/745/D610) that have an asset field, this one is not used.

    Again, thanks! :worthy:

Tried this on a PowerEdge 2900 and had no luck.

Booted with the CD that has the dell software on it.
type "asset PASS:12/31" and press enter...
type "asset" to see that the asset tag is indeed entered.
    Ctrl-Alt-Del
    Says it's in manufacturer mode
    Ctrl-Alt-Del again
Boots into server2008 but slic toolkit still unchanged. Am I missing a step?

Silly me, Sebus linked me to a chinese post that showed me the error of my ways. using "ASSET PASS: 1234" without the quotes worked and validated it.

That is strange as asset is DOS executable, so it makes no difference what case you type it in, as DOS is not case-sensitive...

had success with a Dell r710
    official bios 6.4.0

i found 2 separate good examples of this working (put url in google translate):

    hxxp://hi.baidu.com/chinasjy/item/7d93dfcba3987b16b77a2431

    hxxp://blog.csdn.net/yanshurong/article/details/6819549

    long/short story:

get a copy of SvctagV3.4.rar (google for it)

    boot dell r710 to msdos
    run
    "ASSET PASS: 1234"

you will get this sort of output:

    ASSET - Version 2.09 (C) Copyright 1993-2004 DELL Inc.
About to chang the Asset Tag. Are you sure [y, n] y
    Service Tag => 4YH8 12X
    Asset Tag => PASS: 1234

    all done, reboot
server will now boot to manufacturing mode, also it didn't show me 'configuring memory', i got a black screen instead, which was scary as it takes an age to sort it's memory out, the dell logo then popped up, no problem

boot to windows, windows activated, no problem, reboot again to get a 'normal' bootup/post, job done

    ---
sorry for links being crap, forum wouldn't let me post them as i need more posts *sigh*

    edit jan 2014

just adding i'v also now done this on a Dell Poweredge 2950 Bios 2.6.1
then upgraded bios to 2.7.0, still works

Just did this on a r610 with 6.4.0 bios = windows not activated. Do I need to use a slp key or something? I did not enter any key during installation. Existing (eval?) key ends with 8w83p

Aren't they using UEFI?? We still don't have any utility to enable SLIC on this platform.

maybe same to XPS and Studiom but Im only running Latitude and Precision Laptops.

    E6530
    R6540

    14,4"
    E6410
    E6420
    E6430
    E6440

    13,3"
    E4310

    Works with a Poweredge T320

Used the Dellbiosreset.iso file. Burned it to a cd, and booted. Came up with the usual not support message ran:

    asset /s yourdellservicetaghere
    asset PASS:12/31

    rebooted

Booted to Dell 2.3 per slic toolkit. Worked like a charm.

    Notes -

Done on Dell Bios 2.3.3 (most recent available)
Done with bios in legacy mode.

Please note that the correct syntax is

    "ASSET PASS:1234" instead of

"ASSET PASS: 1234", there is no space between "PASS:" and "1234"

    So, the correct asset command is: ASSET PASS:1234 {so space after the ":"}
    not asset:12/34 ?

The certificate must match the SLIC table, so, it's only a matter of using the correct one. Big OEMs have multiple in use.

The third component, the OEM:SLP product key, only needs to match the SKU. Any valid OEM:SLP key works, as long as it isn't blacklisted.

By the way, Server 2008 R2 is Windows 7, not Vista.
