users have report success with this particular BIOS mod, so what does mean "not working"?
Can you provide more informations.

It means that Everest reports it as SLIC 2.0 and not 2.1 as it should!
:)
Pls help us!

ok, i tried all the tools inclduing the newer cpc_dmi tools i found on some site, but i am getting nowhere with it. Unable to set SLP to ON, unable to change SKU (or read it), and cpc_dmi tools require a "featurebyte" which i can not find on or inside my system anywhere. Anybody has an idea how to maybe add the SLIC to my DC7900 machine and enable it to be shown?

I`ve asked in another forum to mod a bios for a HP Compaq Evo N620c Notebook. Its a little bit older one but it works still well. They told me there to ask here for advice. As I`ve read in the threadtitle this is no request thread, so what have I to do to get my mod bios. Would someone give me a link where I`ve to start reading to learn how to mod. By the way if its better to let the fingers from modding a N620c please tell me.
thanks

I`ve read in this thread and found the way how to patch bios. But this doesn`t work for me. The HPQflash I found is ver 4.253. My N620c told
'The system does not contain the necessary WMI support for this version of HPQFlash. Please use a version og HPQFlash prior to version 4.0'
Is there a way how to use the ver 4.253 or is there a 3er version I cam use.
thanks

maybe I misunderstood something. I`ve read this thread (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=111460&postcount=290) and thought it would be possible to mod the bios of my N620c. I thought the only problem would be how to fix the checksum of the HPQFlash so that the modded bios could be flashed. As the HPQFlash ver 4 doesn`t work for me Iwas looking for a ver 3.xxx. So there isn`t a way to mod my bios?

hi,

that's not a surprise, if you cannot find the slic table there is nothing to do.

Ref DC7100, DC7600, DC7700, DC7800

Is there a way then... to read the full bios....and program it...either via Linux... (heard this allows reading...) or via.. removal..and writing...

There has just got to be a way to do it...

hi,
does your machine have been shipped with non-Vista OS, if yes the slic table is "hiden" and you need a DMI tool to force SKU OS to vista.
here a post describing the method with an other DMI tool http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=111622#post111622
hope that will help you

yup, it came with non-vista, thanks for the info, will check it

Captured the 4MB BIOS ROM file using Linux's flashrom utility

I've been able to save a 4MB dump of my bios using the linux flashrom utility. I enabled SMBUS using step 1 shown HP are sneaky and disable the SMBUS interface in the bios likely to prevent such utilities accessing the SPI interface. The bios was saved using:

# flashrom -f -r -c AT45DB321D 2510P-F0A-dump.rom
Calibrating delay loop... OK.
No coreboot table found.
Found chipset "Intel ICH8M-E", enabling flash write... OK.
No EEPROM/flash device found.
Force read (-f -r -c) requested, forcing chip probe success:
Found chip "Atmel AT45DB321D" (4096 KB) at physical address 0xffc00000.
Force reading flash... done.

I wasn't sure if I captured the complete ROM or not, so then compared against and noticed I too had captured what looks like the "fru" whitelist, multiple 80:86 Intel devices, SLIC markers, correct HP serial/model numbers and the final end string being the BIOS date. THough my dump loose more encoded. Here's the from the above command. Serial/model has been replaced with CNFxxxxx and RLxxxxxx to avoid tracking.

Then I tried:

# flashrom -f -w 2510P-F0A-dump.rom AT45DB321
Calibrating delay loop... OK.
No coreboot table found.
Found chipset "Intel ICH8M-E", enabling flash write... OK.
No EEPROM/flash device found.
If you know which flash chip you have, and if this version of flashrom
supports a similar flash chip, you can try to force read your chip. Run:
flashrom -f -r -c similar_supported_flash_chip filename

Note: flashrom can never write when the flash chip isn't found automatically.

:( . Anyone have any idea what all these items are on the SMBUS? 0x69 is the PLL.

Hi BIOS Experts, i have hp pavilion m7581in with XP Media Center installed in it. I wanted to know that if i mod the BIOS to SLIC 2.1 (if possible) to get windows 7 then WILL I LOOSE THE LICENSING SYSTEM FOR XP?
Another question is that when i downloaded the updated BIOS from hp and when i extracted it, it was a .rom format but when i saved the current BIOS using winflash, it was in .bin format. I m now cnfused that which one is the BIOS file? If i would have updated my PC with .rom file had my PC been crashed though it was an original update?

Hi,

ok I updated a HP nx6325 from SLIC 2.0 to SLIC 2.1 with the method of in memory exchange.

Here's how I've done it:

1. Start HPQFlash and follow procedure until it says "Next" will start the update.
2. Starting HxDen with Administration rights (as the HPQFlash).
3. Load HP SLIC 2.1 Bin into HxDen.
4. Open Memory of HPQFlash from HxDen and search for "SLIC".
5. Replace the areas of RSA Key and SLIC Marker in memory and when finished save and close HxDen.
6. Click next in HPQFlash to start BIOS update.

7. Have SLIC 2.1 :-)

can you please post full info - i have searched everywhere and tried to follow several guides without success

Captured the 4MB BIOS ROM file using Linux's flashrom utility

I've been able to save a 4MB dump of my bios using the linux flashrom utility. I enabled SMBUS using step 1 shown here. HP are sneaky and disable the SMBUS interface in the bios likely to prevent such utilities accessing the SPI interface.

SMBus and SPI are totally independent. The flashrom utility can talk to SPI (flash chip), but not SMBus (clock chip etc.).

The bios was saved using:

# flashrom -f -r -c AT45DB321D 2510P-F0A-dump.rom
Calibrating delay loop... OK.
No coreboot table found.
Found chipset "Intel ICH8M-E", enabling flash write... OK.
No EEPROM/flash device found.
Force read (-f -r -c) requested, forcing chip probe success:
Found chip "Atmel AT45DB321D" (4096 KB) at physical address 0xffc00000.
Force reading flash... done.

There are multiple problems with the output above:

You are using a flashrom version which is at least half a year old. That's ancient.
flashrom doesn't find your chip. This could be caused by the ancient flashrom version, or perhaps your chip has an unexpected ID.
Forced read on Intel chipsets can lead to skipped regions (this is a chipset limitation). You can't know that, but newer flashrom versions would have warned you.
AFAIK you didn't report the issues above to the flashrom development team.

Please retry with a current flashrom version (straight from the flashrom svn tree) and if that one still doesn't find the chip, contact flashrom developers by mail flashrom _at_ flashrom.org or on IRC irc.freenode.net/#flashrom.

I wasn't sure if I captured the complete ROM or not, so then compared against TTAV134's eeprom dump using a burner and noticed I too had captured what looks like the "fru" whitelist, multiple 80:86 Intel devices, SLIC markers, correct HP serial/model numbers and the final end string being the BIOS date. THough my dump loose more encoded. Here's the 2510P BIOS DUMP (4MB) from the above command. Serial/model has been replaced with CNFxxxxx and RLxxxxxx to avoid tracking.

Then I tried:

# flashrom -f -w 2510P-F0A-dump.rom AT45DB321
This command line can't work. See below: "flashrom can never write when the flash chip isn't found automatically".

Technically, it could write in such cases, but there were too many people who tried exactly that, ignored all warnings and killed their BIOS, and because of that this functionality has been disabled.
