Hi guys...on the right forum now I hope. I have MSI mainboard and tried an SLIC_ASUS flash but no success - here are the details as requested:
-Motherboard Manufacturer: MSI
-Model: K8MM-V
-Bios revision: 1.A
-VISTA:Not Activated
-911medic
-Modded BIOS link: http://slics.myftp.org/MSI_7142v1A_ASUS.rar

Bootloaders will replace the SLIC in the BIOS. If you've installed one you'll need to remove it in order for the modded BIOS to work. If you have, then this utility may help remove it. If you haven't installed one you can skip this step.

No......I mean to flash like AFUDOS /iBIOSNAME.ROM
NOT.....AFUDOS /iBIOSNAME.ROM /pbnc /n
These are the switches..
You still need to clear cmos and load defaults..

Ok i resolve thanks YEN for help ;)
WickedNick's detailed explanation of AMI module header:
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=37664&postcount=94
Example of headers using A7345IMSorg.180 from Yen's SSV2 guide:
(earlier post http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=22879&postcount=38)
MMTool-1b
RomLoc: 1C
Source size: 60B20
Size in Rom: 30110 (14h + 300FC)
MMTool-PCI Option rom
RomLoc: 3012C
Source size: A800
Size in Rom: 608C (14h + 6076h + 2 following FF, counts toward MMTool size)
1B header @ 8-1Bh (14h)
FC 00 03 00 = 1B compressed size (300FC)
8A 4E 0E 61 = checksum
10 00 9C 80 = pointer
FF FF 1B 00 = FF FF module size, 1B module type, 00 compressed
00 00 00 00 = target offset
Beginning of 1B @ 1C-30117h (300FC)
FC 00 03 00 = size of 1B compressed (300FC)
20 0B 06 00 = size of 1B uncompressed size (60B20)
...
PCI ROM header @ 30118-3012B (14h)
78 60 00 00 size of compressed PCI ROM (6076h + 2 FF)
92 54 3B A7 checksum
0C 00 1A 36 pointer
78 60 20 00 size of compressed rom (6078h), 20 module type, 00 compressed
EC 10 68 81 target offset
Beginning of PCI ROM @ 3012C-361A1 (6076h)
76 60 00 00 size of compressed PCI ROM (real size)
00 A8 00 00 size of uncompressed PCI ROM
As you can see from the PCI ROM above, some modules are padded with 1-3 FF's after the module, probably to make the module size divisible by 4. MMTool and the 14h header include these FF bytes in the calculated size. However if you export the commpressed module from MMTool you'll get just the actual module. So when MMTool says your new compressed 1B is the same size, sometimes you may find it is actually a byte or two bigger or smaller with a differing number of FF's following the module in the BIOS. (Keep this in mind if you use the exported compressed 1B file to copy into the new BIOS as opposed to copying the whole block from the one BIOS to another like in the guide.)
Additional info about the CRC:
Manual method of calculating AMI checksum
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=37455&postcount=84
WickedNick's SUM32 utility for calculating the checksum:
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=37665&postcount=95
Usage: run on file consisting of header+module. Replace checksum bytes in header with zeroes before running.

Hi All,
I have been reading here, playing with ACPITool and WinHex looking at SSV2 mods. I have written a little tool - http://drop.io/slictool2.
** Please note this is an early beta **
** Works means the binary output looks OK - I don't own these boards in question **
I would value feedback and have a couple of specific questions regarding parsing a ROM image. I enclose 4 samples in the archive.
1) 180.ROM - an MSI ROM (the one yen originally used). Has 8 bytes of FFh then the first module header. All subsequent module headers can be found from the 3rd DWORD in the table. This works OK. Try it! :)
2) 1201.ROM - an asus p5k rom. Has 16 byte ASUS header then 12 bytes of FFh then first module header. All subsequent module headers can be found from the 3rd DWORD in the table. This works OK.
- I search for the first header by looking for at least 4xFFh then presuming the first non FFh byte is the first byte of the first module header... HOWEVER.
3) 1604.ROM - an asus P5B rom. Has some odd ASUS FC module header then lots of FFh and the ASUSTEK string is a long way in......... fails.
4) 330.ROM - an MSI rom. Has 12 bytes of FFh then the first module header HOWEVER All subsequent module headers can NOT be found from the 3rd DWORD in the table - points randomly.... fails.
What on earth am I missing. MMTool reads them all OK. What generic rules are there for parsing a ROM image to traverse all the modules...... I am tearing my hair out! (I tried doing it by just adding the module size to the offset but this missed modules in both the first two ROMs).
Otherwise program features
SSV3 (automated with AMIMMWIN or with MMTOOL prompts)
SSV2 - will find space in ROM, correct SLIC checksum, patch 1B and modify OEM/Table ID then Creator ID to correct size. Reintegrate and correct module checksum.
Final question
5) Where in the ROM image do you find the ROM checksum (the one Yen suggests chaning the last byte of SLIC from FF to 89 to correct) and how is it calculated - (is it a sum like the modules - i assume it is if one byte change corrects - or CRC32 or something else).
Also value thoughts and feedback. :D
Cheers,
Andy

I would see if you can make your utility use the output from AMIMMWIN.exe for module locations.
I don't know about the checksum locations for the whole bios, but I think this is the reasoning for the part about the SLIC:
375 FF bytes sum to 89. The 374 byte slic sums to 0. Changing the following FF byte to 89 negates the change caused by adding the SLIC.

I'm not able to download from here........I'll have a look next time.
The explanation of Zort about to add '89h' is perfect. It just remains the 8 bit checksum of the biosfile, nothing more.
Have a look at module 80h, it's the infomodule. MMtool uses it to read out the module structure.
Why do you want to locate each module by yourself? Just use amimmwin /info. To search for the 1b (header) would be enough.
How would you make your code to remain the original compressed size of the modified 1b module??

We can insert any brand slic and slp we have available, and they will activate accordingly. MSI makes boards for HP, Gateway, etc...They activate??
It will be fine. How about HP. I will send the oembios files and cert..
Do you know how to activate the OS? The board and Bios are just one piece..

Hi
I have improved. http://drop.io/slictool2
** Please bear in mind this tool is still beta. It is really written for curiosity but hopefully will be useful in the future **
I would value input from the regular modders to see if the binary output looks anything like what you would do manually. It creates 1B.BIN (the original 1B module), 1B_SLIC.BIN (the updated 1B module) and <BIOS>_SLIC.ROM the SLICd BIOS.
It performs SSV2 and 3 (with the option of 3 being automated or with a manual MMTool step at the end).
It now parses the entire file looking for valid headers. It gets the right size doing exactly what you said to do :p - it recurses through the tables first replacing the OEM/Table ID then the Creator ID. If that isn't enough it then sequentally replaces 4 byes of the copyright string at a time.
Value feedback as it should make this process much easier. (Note it currently needs amimmwin in the same path as the bios file and slic file)
Cheers,
Andy
PS - question on ROM file checksum. I can (and the prog does) module and SLIC checksums fine. Playing around with the ROM file the checksum seems to be 4 bytes after $BCS. If seems to be a simple sum (negated). I note MMTool stores the time of last change in hex format at the end - and a +/- 1 here is reflected by at -/+ 1 in the respective byte of the dword checksum. However changing ASUSTEK at offset 0 to BSUSTEK does not change the checksum. I have written a routine to recurse every 4 byte boundry from the start and calculate then checksum from there but have had no luck. Any ideas from where it starts (it's not the first valid header either) or is there anything else vital I am missing.

Very impressive..I have looked at the tool with a couple of bios and it appears to produce valid mods. I would have altered the text after the AMIBIOS 0800 string in my mod, and this allows for additional slp string. I think that for a mass prod. tool, this could work. I have not had much luck with the auto tools so far..I guess I am jaded a bit, but this would be interesting to see tested..
Other than the removal of MSFT string for 1b size, I think it is similar to how I would have modded by manual..
Good Job with this...:D:D I will look at it further with time, I am sure...
edit: Could the tool search for open FF bytes after 50000h. I was under the impression that before this would not work..Just curious..

Brilliant Job - WOW. I am in learning mode and this is amazing. I am comparing the SSV2 that 911Medic did for me on the K9A2 Platinum 1.73 Bios to this tool and it is almost exact (when I compare the 1B_SLIC.ROM to what is in the modified bios). I am getting ready to flash the manual mod which I will try then do one with this tool and try that also
However, I am getting an Arithmetic Error when doing a SSV2 mod on this Bios: http://www.box.net/shared/ab6x5cvhut
This is a MSI bios for K9A2 Platinum board. Can you please check this out why the tool is failing? From the log file it looks like it fails right before it creates the SLIC file. It is able to write the IB_SLIC.BIN sussessfully.

Flash without the switches and this may afford the AMIBOOT recover. Do not flash bootblock..

Thanks for this mate. I have read your PM and please find version that fixes the problem with 512K BIOSes (the next_pointer's are all invalid) and also implements (I hope) the method you described in your PM. I have been reading the ACPI 3.0b specs - it suggets that the OEM+table ID in RSDT,XSDT and FACP must all much. However it also suggests that the table ID in the others should be different to allow searching etc... so it only modifies the oem table 6 bytes for the others.
Haven't changed the existing SLIC table yet.... might change to OEMS as OEMx is a valid table whereas SLEC isn't.
Also playing around with checksums - I am sure the ROM checksum is 32 bit so I don't think just changing byte 375 after SLIC to 89h works....... I have some thoughts.
v0.4 ** REMOVED - ERROR FOUND IN PATCHING CODE **
As it's nearly christmas and I am working tomorrow (boo hiss) I have only tested against a couple of ROMs.

Fixed problem with 0.4 - was writing 0's in wrong place so DO NOT USE.
However throws up interesting situation. I wanted only to adjust the OEM ID (6 bytes) of tables other than RSDT/XSDT/FACP as per ACPI specs - however when I do that, even with 0'ing the entire copyright string the resultant compressed 1B is still too big - is there anything else I can blank to get the size down (other than the creator IDs). What about the second copyright string (or is that the one you see at the bottom of the screen at POST)?
New version therefore has to replace OEM AND Table ID for all ACPI tables. The copyright string is then 0'd and filled with randomly generated bytes - occasionally this results in an overshoot and an error - just run it again- I am working on this - if predictable values are used then sometimes compression is too good.....
Still consider beta. Value feedback.

** Changelog
v0.5 (since 0.3)

** Changelog
v0.5 (since 0.3)
ADD: Range can be specified for SLIC insertion

ADD: Copyright string is replaced and all OEM/Table IDs are patched to match the SLIC
ADD: Existing SLIC in 1B is removed
ADD: Log file generation
FIX: Module scan for 512K MSI BIOS not working (headers have invalid next_offset)
FIX: Creating a smaller 1B module caused an exception (due to unsigned int)
FIX: 32 bit ROM checksum is corrected (in theory....)
FIX: Go button disabled whilst the routine is executing

Tried this version - appears that IB_SLIC.BIN is not created if I choose MMTool to manually update the 1B module in the bios in SSV3 mode.
If I choose full auto mode, it does create the xxx-SLIC.ROM file. Not sure if the IB module is the slic version in the modified bios.
Works correctly in SSv2 mode (creates the IB_SLIC.bin and the modified bios output files)
Please take a look at the code

ADD: Options dialog
ADD: Check for previous SLIC mod
ADD: Code to get correct 1B size now replaces zeroed areas with the original contents
ADD: Finer granularity for sizing routine
FIX: Check for presence of MMTool (if selected)
FIX: SSV3 mod not create 1B_SLIC.BIN file
FIX: MMTool checkbox only for SSV3 method
To correct 1b size
If too large - will zero first the copyright string, then the IBM string then the address string.
If then to small - will sequentially add back the last string zeroed until the correct size
If too large to start then will insert dummy bytes before the AMIBIOS string.
This also allows it now to only replace the table ID for RSDT/XSDT/FACP tables as per ACPI specs - although this is controllable by an option.
Consider beta and value all feedback as always - and thanks especially to 911medic, zort and p4spooky!
I am watching the p5q thread with interest also.....

I like it...The tool works very well. I REALLY, REALLY like the resizing routine..Strong work!!:D:D
I was curious about the 32bit checksum..
If we haven't had any probs with just adjusting for the slic code, why do we need to adjust the 32 bit checksum now??
I dont think it is important if the 8bit is adjusted for slic code.., just my opinion...Could enlighten me to the reasoning??
edit: I tried it on a couple of the 4096k bios and some 512k, 2048k..this is very consistant. for SSV2, Is there a way we can add string at the $ODB$ for some slp1. I sometimes do this in manual mods with HP,DELL,ASUS mods..Is this possible??
I tried adding the slic file with slp1 strings for SSV3 and it wont let me override..Here (http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/8/13/2048424/My%20Documents/slp1_2.rar) is an example of what I am talking about..
Again..VERY nice program. You are very skilled..

v0.7
ADD: SLP1.0 string insertion
ADD: Fix AMIMMWIN damage if used for SSV3
FIX: Small bug in resize code
http://drop.io/slictool2
The SLP code works either with or without SLIC (ie you can create a BIOS with one, the other or both). It also works for both SSV2 and SSV3 ie. with SSV2 the 1B is resized and copied, with SSV3 it is just reinserted. The SLP code expects a TXT file with the bytes to be inserted (so no CRLF at the end).
BTW do you know if the space (Chr(32)) after the SLP string is important - zhaolings tool inserts one for most SLP strings??
Q - is putting it after $ODB$ enough for all SLPs. Looking at the thread in MSFN where OEMBIOS.DATs have been decrypted (still trying to figure how - something to do with the first 80 (?h) bytes of OEMBIOS.SIG as a certificate/key) some locations have to be quite precisice (eg. Dell).
Cheers,
Andy
The string behind $ODB$ will be always mapped to 000FE840. If you check the valid ranges, you'll see that almost all OEM'S have valid addresses there. (except MSI). If you want to use multi OEM you have to place the one with narrow ranges like Dell and Sony first, like Dell ComputerSony Corporation.
The space behind is not necessary, you may even use string sequences without any space.
About to decrypt OEM files: Let winlogon do the job for you. Exchange the OEM files with the ones you want decrypt, (re)boot xp and dump the winlogon process right after you've logged into xp using offon's tool:
Here is the interesting part and his tool.

MSI boards are notorious for providing no way to recover if you have a bad flash. I think you should let Medic handle this. :D
I am testing the tool doing SSV2 mod on a ECS G31T-M motherboard that I don't care if I loose. So far this tool has been amazing. NO ISSUES with 0.8

The slic 8 is still being tested..I think it would work, if you are not familiar with the process, it may be better to not use it.
Lets see what we can do about this then!!!
I have added some code so that every file step is verified. Some general tidying and improving of prompts esp related to success/fail.
1) I value general feedback - ease of use/design etc.
2) Specifically I would value feedback about any 'difficult' AMI BIOSes you have come accross - this should handle all core 8 BIOSes every which way.
This should be ready for prime time (for those that understand the general principles and are happy to take all the risks involved in flashing a BIOS and are aware of recovery procedures).

v0.9
ADD: Verification at each step (module insertion, mmtool usage etc.)
ADD: Icon and XP visual style
ADD: Option to only alter RSDT and XSDT tables
ADD: Option to enforce padding before SLIC in SSV2 method - requested by zort
ADD: Option to 'correct' 32 bit checksum (automatic before)
ADD: Status box
FIX: Default start address for SLIC in SSV2 set to 50000h (Otherwise inserts in first 64k of some ASUS BIOSes) - thanks 911medic
FIX: Append SLP1.0 string to existing string at $ODB$
FIX: Speedup module scan routine
FIX: Improved clarity of prompts
FIX: Renamed SSV1 to SSV to avoid AWARD BIOS confusion
Enjoy :D

Hi Medic911!
Thanks to you, YEN and the others for the great work! I have the same Mobo (MSI P35 Platinum PCB 1.1) with BIOS 1.9 ASUS SLIC, patched by you and working great so far. :-)
When i now switch to the 1.1 version (7345v1A) with MSI slic, do i need a OEM product-key from MSI (if yes, can someone post or pm me plz...?) for my Vista Home Premium x86 to activate? Or is it possible that you create a ASUS slic based? Sorry for my newbie questions....
Thank you!

No switches..Just flash away. If you get an error, then we will try the switches.
We do not want to flash the bootblock if we dont have to..:D
Thanks 911medic, i will give it a try. Await feedback from me in the next couple of days.

Hi. I see a lot of requests for modded BIOS, but can't seem to understand what is being modified?
Ended up here looking for a way to modify the BIOS myself, to enable OSX86 installation on my MSI P35 Neo2FR/7345. What I need is something like this here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/index.php/t90505-0.html, as the 1.8 rev of BIOS (which seems to be the only one floating around on OSX86 forums) doesn't seem to like my E8400 CPU :( Have had to rescue my BIOS from floppy numerous times now, so have give up on the 1.8
So my question is, I see there are v1a's of the 7345 BIOS floating around here (which I will try as soon as I get off work), should this enable OS X installation (namely the multi-core problem mentioned in URL)?
Or: Would anybody be so kind and modify the BIOS as mentioned in URL? :o
I know there are quite a few peeps out there that would appreciate such a mod :D
Edit: I see now that http://www.osxcores.site50.net/page1/page1.html has a mod for second newest BIOS revision, which may work (try after work).

Has anyone tested andyp's slic tool to patch an msi bios yet?
Yep..it works. I adjust the settings a bit though. I have been using the tool off and on and then checking the mods against a manual. They are only slightly different.
Erik75 is a tool mod..I only check the range for slic insertion and remove the 0 in the second box so it starts at 50000h.
I do NOT have the 32 bit checksum adjusted.
I allow padding
I do NOT check the force below AMIBIOS string. (this has caused problems with other bios for me)..
So..the only boxed checked are the range for insertion and the allow padding box. The padding is optional. probably not necessary, as I have placed slic code VERY close to other code without problems..
Use the ssv2, check for a log. Check the log before you flash to see that all is good. Very seldom, if at all anymore, is there a discrepancy..
Thanks for the info 911medic!

Hi
I think p4spooky has used successfully as well several times.
The tool will check the BIOS checksum before and after modding so even if the 32bit checksum box isn't ticked it won't allow a bad BIOS out (eg. ASUS SSV2)
What problems (other than not finding a space) have you had with the force below AMIBIOS string, I know yen is of the opinion that this should be default.
The range insertion has been default on at 50000h for a while now, what version are you using ;)
Cheers,
Andy

I used the latest. I just make sure the boxes are ticked as I need. Thats all.
I think the tool will work for most all bios now. I am curious about the core 7 bios mods...
As far as forcing the slic below the amibios, we had one a while back that would not activate with no slic at the acpiscope or everest. This was with he forced box ticked. I manually modded it to a different area, I dont remember where (sorry) and it worked. I have also had a few I tried with the tool and flash with ezflash and they threw chksm errors. A manual mod flashed without error. Strange I know.
The latest problem I had with checksum was with a couple of biostar boards.

I think the ezflash error was due to amimmwin modifying 2 bytes in the EBB header that it shouldn't do. That is detected (and prevented by keeping the preserve boot block option checked) in the latest version.
Core 7 - I haven't had any successful tests yet. I don't own any boards that old..... comparing it to the few existing mods I can find it should be OK. Let me know if you do any :D
Let me know if you come accross any issues - anything at all. I hope it should be issue free now! I will leave it beta a little while longer to make sure. Always happy to Ix.

I have added a 'Verify' button to the latest version that will just check the 3 checksums for the specified BIOS. Nothing is changed.
Hope this is useful.

Very nice Andy. I have not seen any real issues since 0.94 that has the parsing error on 1B module on newer Asus P6T boards. Other than that no major issues. Great job :D

Are you sure you flashed the SLIC'd BIOS from the zip file and not the original. The SLIC your image shows seems to be the dynamically allocated original one. The mod looks good in a hex editor.
How did you flash?

-Edited-
Original HU model bios (VR220X-010H) that came without Windows did not work with OEMCertAutoInstaller featuring proper OEM key, this was the reason for the request.
I tought that the bios upgrade from msi site is the same, but it turns out that it includes a proper SLIC so I can activate, at least with ASUS OEM (Ultimate) key.
Request removed.

SLIC was MSI as you didn't specifically request one. I think that is the ASUS product key. You can use the MSI certificate and key - see first post or I can do an ASUS one for you.

Hello
I would like to request mod for this (old) bios, or some pointers on how to do it myself:
Motherboard Manufacter And Model : MSI KT6 Delta Fis2r (MS-6590)
- Bios Revision : 5.7
- Bios Update date: 2004-11-01
- Bios Type : AMI
- Download Link :http://download1.msi.com.tw/files/downloads/bos_exe/6590v57.zip
I've tried it myself with slictool100rc7, but it bricked the bios.
Also tried Ami_Slic3 but got an "can't ectract 1b module".
Any help would be appreciated.

This is a core v7 BIOS so AMI_SLIC3 won't work. Core 6/7 support in SLICTool is experimental - purely because not many people have boards this old!
When you say bricked - what exactly happened. Have you been able to recover?
There is not really such a thing as an SSV2 for Core 7 so this might be difficult. Although, perhaps there is no reason why there shouldn't be.....

Thanx for your reply,
Slictool gave no errors, I got a rom file the same size as the original.
Used the original flash utility, and flashed it without errors.
Restart didn't work, the Ami buildin recovery tried to read from A: and gave some beeps.
So it might be possible but not with a tool, maybe by hand?
Is there a thread here on how to manually do this?
I have searched a bit on this forum, but there are so much threads and posts, just can't find the time to read it al.

Maybe by hand. No tutorial though. I will look at it shortly, but can't make any promises..:D

Yen has some experience with these. I will post the picture he showed me illustrating the changes. Basically the 0F module does not contain the ACPI tables, it contains code to construct the ACPI tables. Load 0F.BIN and 0F_SLIC.BIN into Ida pro or the disassembler of your choice and see what's happening. I am reasonably happy that the code changes are OK.
We know that current MSI boards do not like the changes caused by the AMI tools to insert modules - hence the SSV2 method. I don't know how relevant this is for older boards - I am sure core 7 MSI boards have been done this SSV1 way before.
Firstly it is worth 911medic and the other modders to have a look at what I have done (via the tool) and to get their opinions...... I don't think Yen is back for a while. I can try and do an SSV2 type mod by nopping bits of apparently unused code but it must be conisdered VERY risky........
Edit: Pics added. Unfortunately it is not just a case of pattern matching. Dissassemble the code and it will make sense..... although I still don't understand why it is not working!
Edit: I MAY HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM - please try http://drop.io/8rkrjop - nothing to do with above - may be a module checksum issue

Very nice, I'll give it a try tomorrow.
I was just about to ask if I could put the 0F module and the 23 module (slic) into the original rom with amibcp. Or would that have been to easy
Reading hex and assembly are not my strong points :D

I'm sorry andyp, it didn't work.
I even had to reset the cmos before I could force Amiboot to recover.
I think I will have to live with softmod or no pre-activation at all.
Thanx anyway!

Hi
I have identified another potential problem/solution - I wasn't reupdating the SLIC offset in RSDT if the insertion of 0F altered the offset - if happy then get new file from http://drop.io/8rkrjop (end in SLIC2).
I have done it through manually as well and it compares.

The only thing I note is that for all core 8 mods the SLIC offset is put at 2Ch and not 30h (but Yen's pics show 30h). The ACPI spec implies it could be either..... it might be worth a try at 2Ch.......

Shouldn't need to flash the bootblock. It doesn't change. Looking at the command line options I would suggest -B C R although I doubt it will make too much difference.

Could you post an ACPIScope report
Load ACPIScope
Select File -> Load ACPI Information -> From BIOS
Then Save As something.ATS
and upload that file
I just want to see how the RSDT table is populated
