View Full Version : persistent SLIC Bios

Hi!
Recently, i've upgrade my Win7 Rc installation to Win7 RTM (fresh install). I've read a lot about different ways to activate it: loader or SLIC.
I've choose to try the SLIC 2.1 way (because it's more funny ^^). Well it's getting me crazy.
First i Upgraded my motherboard (Gigabyte P35-DS3 rev 1.0 (Award)) with modBios made by someone called Alex (i got it in another forum). It was suppose to contain the HP SLIC info. Well i did a fresh install of Win7 (from MSDN) but not was able to activate it.
Then i thought that i should mod my own BIOS, a lot of reading and i got it. I made an Award modified Bios with DELL Slic 2.1. Next step was to reflash my bios but here is were the problem appears.
I cannot (or i don't know how to) replace the slic info in my acpi table. I do reflash my bios but the SLIC info (readed with RW-Everything) doesn't change. The OEM value in different tables of the ACPI table DOES change, but the info about SLIC doesn't.
Here you have some captures of RW-Everything screen:

[URL=http://img17.imageshack.us/i/slic.jpg/] (http://img412.imageshack.us/i/mcfg.jpg/)
I've used SS3 method in Award Tool.
Any tip will be usefull.
Thanks in advance.

Try reflashing back to the normal bios (without slic) and use the rw everything tool to check if it is gone. If it is gone i can help you to add SLIC 2.1 on it.
After that if slic 2.1 is insert in the bios you need to install the certificate file in c:\ and follow the next commands.
Open CMD (command prompt) and type those 2 lines
slmgr.vbs -ilc Dell.XRM-MS
slmgr -ipk *****-*****-*****-*****-***** (replace *****-***** with the key posted here -> http://freetexthost.com/lxjukmt6th)

If i install the no SLIC bios version, the SLIC table doesn't dissapear :S. I've tried twice :S.
I've tried flashing bios from bios tool (pressing end in the boot) and with the msdos utility with same result.

Did you clear cmos ? and load default settings in the bios ?
PS: Did you use any loader ?

I haven't use any loader. I did clear CMOS (not in HW but SW way (clear CMOS after reflash option)).
I don't know how to erase / change it :S.

Ask medic911 or yen to help you. My idea is just to use the HP SLIC 2.1 and install the HP Certificate in c:\

Gotta love those 'Doh!' moments, sometimes you rack your brain for hours then find out it was something not even related like the loader :)

Yeah, iwas gettin totally mad :S.
By the way i've sucesfully pathced my bios with dell q09, i've reinstalled my win7 (wind spanish from MSDN x64), but it doesn't work :S
I used:
slmgr.vbs -ilc Dell.XRM-MS
slmgr -ipk *****-*****-*****-*****-***** (replace *****-***** with the key posted here -> http://freetexthost.com/lxjukmt6th)
but it says me that the key is not valid, what am i missing?
i used diferents DEll.xMS files with same result.
Then i thought of checking if cert and SLIc is the same, but it isn't!!
I used PubKeyCompare util form this forum but it says that BIOS and XRMl mismatch
What am i doing wrong?
Could be something about using msdn version?

I think you added the SLP file but used the wrong one. (open dell.txt and check what name it has, if it is Dell System then you need to remod your bios. Dell System will activate small business servers only and block activation for 7 and vista.).
1. Re-mod the bios and leave SLP blank (dont need it for windows 7 or vista, only needed for oem activation for xp or small business server)
2. Re-mod the bios and add SLP Dell (open the Dell.txt document and change Dell System to Dell Computer)
3. Send a link to the original bios and i modify it for you if this all isnt clear for you

I'll redo everything again and test again.
I'll be very pleased if insted (of also) making the bios for me you should check if i'm doing something wrong.
This is what I do:
http://www.fileducky.com/bEkZCWHc/
This file contain all the utils i've used:
Award Tool Slic mod 1.17
Award Tool 1.16\SLICS 2.1\DELL QA09.BIN
certs (vista)\DELL.XRM-MS
Original Bios.
I've used ssv3 method with no extra options in advanced tab (Manual location .... and force adjustment method unchecked).
I've left in blank SLP field.
General Options: All unchecked except:
Only replace OEM ID in additional tables.
Correct DSDT checksum
Correct whoel bvios checksum
correct individual modules checksum
correct msb/lsb checksum
Ignore FFh checksum error.
Process succesfull.
1) Flash original Bios (through qbios panel (motherboard bios utility used during POST)
2) Reboot
3) Flash moded Bios (trough spiflash utility used in DOS)
4) Reboot
5) Install Win7
6) slmgr.vbs -ilc Dell.XRM-MS (using the same certificate used in modding bios)
7) slmgr -ipk *****-*****-*****-*****-***** (replace *****-***** with the key posted here -> http://freetexthost.com/lxjukmt6th)
I'm going to do it now and post result later.

$·"%·$%·$"%$·%"·$%!
It doesn't work! Grrrr :(
I don't know what i'm doing wrong :S
Should i do this process without internet access?
I'm going to check if th ecertificate still match with the slic bios.
P.S. It's driving me crazy.
Edit:
I've dump my slic info (it seems to be ok to Slic_Dump_ToolKit), cheched with dell.xrmms file used when modding bios with the PubKeyCompare tool and it says that digital license XRM and Bios SLIC mismatch! How can it be possible?.
I don't know what i'm doing wrong, let's do some questions:
*Should i do the proccess without inet access?
*Am i taking the correct bin file (SLICS 2.1\DELL QA09.BIN)?
*When i finish to install Win7 and it ask me for Serial, should i put some serial instead leaving it in blank and deactivating the field "Activate Windows when i'm connected"?
*If i want to try another modified Bios, do i need to repeat the entire process? (reinstall win7)
And the last one:
*Should $ill Gate$ and Gigabyte C€Os be drinking whiskey and laughing at me? ;).
Edit 2:
P.S.2: I flash twice because i've read somewhere that it's good to flash the original bios with Qbios (motherboard flash utility) and the modified with DOS utility.

Because you use the wrong files then. My gigabyte mobo accepted it in 1 time.
Once again give me a link to your bios and i mod it for you (correctly) :D

Aaaaaah here we go it seems the loader is still active on your pc. This is what you need to do, delete all partitions and reinstall 7. If you dont delete the partitions the loader will still show up after the next fresh install.
So when you boot from disc, chose the option remove partition (remove all partitions) and then add the partition(s) back, format it and install 7 on it.
Info about your key.

Wow! It's gonna be impossible to delete all partitions. I have 3 partitions, main for win7 and 2 more with more than 400 gygabytes of data. I'll try removing only the main partition and disabling the others (i've two adictional hard disks) hard disks.

Delete the one where windows 7 has been installed and used the loader. After that follow the steps again (certificate + key) and it should work.

Ok, this confuses me a little but now I think I have done it the wrong way myself. In my SLP dir there was Dell System.txt and Dell.txt, both containing the same letters inside namely: Dell System.
People told me to use the Dell.txt as Dell System.txt was wrong. I could not understand this, but I trusted them so I did. Even though it for me looked like same side of the coin.
I have so far only Vista 64 installed, and that works. But you mean i need to re-flash my BIOS and change the text inside to 'Dell Computer' then instead? Just to be 110% clear for myself as well :)

For those who choose DELL, open the folder SLICS 2.1 and inside is a SLIC DELL_QA09.BIN. I strongly suggest you choose this SLIC if you want to activate Windows 7 using DELL SLIC v2.1. Match the DELL_QA09.BIN SLIC with the DELL SLP. Be Careful and Do not choose SLIP DELL SYSTEM. If You choose DELL SYSTEM, this will cause you not to be able to activate Windows 7.

This was what confused me in the first place when I asked previously. Because it said I should match it with DELL SLP. But there was only one there, Dell.txt. Then i found a package with 40 SLICs and all that and inside that one it had Dell system.txt So I asked as I said before, and they said I should use Dell.txt with Win7 and not Dell system.txt
There was no DELL SLP to match then. So really, the part about matching the SLIC with the SLP could've been left out since it has no mission in flashing for Win7? :)

Hmmm, reading this thread through many times to see if there's something I can do to help. Before I decided to flash I read a lot about the loaders. It seems some of the loaders use a hidden partition that's created by Win7 when it installs (100 mb?) and then there's the main Win7 partition. Did you check if you have a small 100 mb partition as well? If so, both needs to be deleted I think.
I might be shooting blanks here, just trying to help :)
EDIT: As this partition is hidden, if you have it, it will not have any drive letter so you can't see it in Explorer. But you can see it in any partitioning tool.

Not true. This only happens if you partition within Windows setup.
If you use a 3rd party tool to make your partitions and format them before installing Win7, it won't make the hidden partition.
*BTW, I've also been searching for a Gigabyte cert for Win7 and currently there are none available. No OEM that I know of uses Gigabyte boards.
Digging through Gigabyte's site shows they only have 1 laptop that will ship with Win7, and that's only an option. By default, this machine doesn't come with an OS.
