Your bios is stored on a chip on your board, not in the registry.
You cant modify your bios thru the registry.
You can see the bios version and type by installing software like Everest or the way you describe it
If you want a bios mod for your computer post a download link to the bios for your computer.
Thanks for your answer Petar.
I downloaded Everest and will post a request on the forum. But i still don't understand the goal of a bios mod. Is the only way to activate Vista?

Wow, this is a long thread. I was using a loader, but I accidentally installed the KB update that detects them, so I removed all traces and would like to add a SLIC table to my BIOS. I found one for my P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe and it was easy to get going. However, I cant seem to find one for my Intel D946GZIS (but I have found ones for other boards, so it cant be impossible). Anyways, here goes:
Board - Intel D946GZIS
SLIC Type - Any, ASUS is preferred
Revision - 0087
BIOS Link - http://downloadmirror.intel.com/14847/eng/TS0087P.BIO
A huge thanks to whoever takes the time to add a SLIC table to it!

If Vista Loader doesnt works for you Paradox will, but you cant install SP1, so bios mod is the only solution.
The goal of a bios mod is to insert a set of strings in it, caled SLIC.
Once you have a SLIC in the bios you can activate Vista with an matching cert, just as the OEM's does.

Ok, now i understand better.
I think it would be useful for everyone to create a sticky thread for newbies like me, avoiding perhaps to answer one thousand time the same question. I can do it if you think it's necessary.
By the way, i've download Everest, and the only thing i have is this:
http://pix.nofrag.com/1/1/9/d5eceb8dfe1f889a5e6acf75ebda8.jpg (http://pix.nofrag.com/1/1/9/d5eceb8dfe1f889a5e6acf75ebda8.html)
So, i still don't know if it's a phoenix, award... etc...

That was my request :
- Motherboard Manufacter And Model :Barebone ASUS Pundit P2-M2A690G
- Bios Revision : 0601
- Bios Type :AMI
- Bios SLIC : asus
- Bios Link : http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/Bar...A690G_0601.zip
The answer :
Try this SLIC = ASUS, flash with Afudos /ixxxx.rom /pbnc /n
http://rapidshare.com/files/113564461/PM2A690G_0601.zip.html
Here is an alternate method SLIC = ASUS
http://rapidshare.com/files/113562914/PM2A690G_0601.zip.html
And now the feedback : :)
It works like a charme since one month with SP1 update and other updates...
Just a detail, you have to rename the file (.ROM) of the bios before flashing. If you dont you won't be able to flash. Anyway it's an error from Asus, the original file can' be flashed too ... I suggest 0601.ROM, it worked nice for me :D

I dont think I will be able to mod a compq bios, maybe some of the more expirienced modders will.
By the way post a direct download link for your bios.
Couse the latest bios that I could find for your notebook is F.11 and I can see that yours is F.16.
Look at other request for an exemple on how to make a request.
Edit. I've found the latest bios F.16 and cant mod it, anyway do a proper request and maybe someone will answer.

Hi Petar. Sorry for the delay in reporting back, but there were a few issues in the bios (Quiet fan not working, etc) which I needed to check out!
Firstly, your mod of version 3.10 was perfect, Slic present, and vista activated ok.
The quiet fan problem, was apparently introduced in v 2.20, and from then on this function of the bios is not working. I have found an alternative v3.10A bios that has this function enabled, would you be kind enough to mod this also for me, so that I can have the latest bios, but also with the quiet fan and slic table enabled?
All details, same as above mod please

Your bios has a complete SLIC in it.
OEM Table = LENOVO
OEM Table ID = TP-68
But I dont have the matching cert for it.
All you have to do is find the cert and activate.
Although there is always the posibility that the SLIC is locked and you wont be able to activate even if you have the cert.
To find out, can you please do the folowing:
Install and open ACPI Scope.
Go to File-->Load ACPI Information from-->BIOS
Save it as *.ats file and upload please.

Thank you very much Fzeven. Worked like a charm on my Vista Ultimate SP1 system. Upgradraded my Asrock 939 Dual Sata2 AMD motherboard (Opteron 165)to this new Intel Asus P5Q3 Deluxe motherboard (Wolfdale e8400).
All I had to do is:
-Uninstall all my old motherboard specific drivers and applications.
-Issue a "sysprep /oobe /shutdown" command.
-Change the motherboard.
-Flash the bios with the one having the same SLIC as before (HP for me).
-Boot and go through the mini post installation procedure. ( no activation needed, as it's already been done with the previous motherboard)
-Install the new motherboard specific drivers and applications.
That's all :)
It was a lot easier than what I was expecting.

@ Fzeven
This is last working one that I know of, I think that I modded some other one's but no confirmation on the working status.
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=22608&postcount=6786
I suggest to use awdflash & clear cmos after flash.
Thanks for all your hard work. Vista activated perfectly with both 2GB and 4GB of RAM.
Unfortunatly, this BIOS is unstable (ASUS problem) with X2 Athlons so I have backflashed to stable (for me) version 0804. (Apparently its a good BIOS for Phenoms)
There have been a two other postings of this 0804 BIOS on this forum but they do not allow me activate Vista. (I have 4GB RAM).
Is there any chance that you could do an ASUS Crosshair SLIC BIOS of version 0804.
Thanks in advance, MK.

I dont think that the name of the file should make you a problem.
You can change the name freely to its original name and flash it.
But when you type the comand, enter the new name you have given to the file.
Edit. How exactly are you trying to upgrade the bios ?
Try to upgrade first with the unmodded bios, to see if everything is well.
Once you've manage to upgrade with the original bios, use the same tools and comands, just rename the modded bios to the name of the original bios file.

Your bios has a complete SLIC in it.
OEM Table = HPQOEMSLIC
OEM Table ID = MPC
Try to activate with this cert:
http://rapidshare.com/files/124408093/HP.XRM-MS
And the key for your version of Vista, the keys manufacturer does not meter.:
http://rapidshare.com/files/107580564/Vista_Keys.txt
Although there is always the posibility that the SLIC is locked and you wont be able to activate although you have the cert.
To find out, can you please do the folowing:
Install and open ACPI Scope.
Go to File-->Load ACPI Information from-->BIOS
Save it as *.ats file and upload please.
Here is the link for the acpi info. I couldn't use acpiscope because im running vista x64 and the it gave me an error "driver failed to load".

OK, I can see that the SLIC is present and that its size is valid 374 bytes.
The OEM Table and OEM Table ID both in the SLIC and in the RSDT table are valid.
Although, without a dump there is always the posibility that there is a code in the bios that shadows a part of the SLIC table with zero bytes.
Which cant bee seen from the info you have provided.
However, have you tryed to activate with the cert I've provided you with, couse I see that it havent been downladed ?
Couse if it activates there is no need to mod the bios.
Just to be on the safe side before moding the bios please make a dump with HWDirect.
Install and open hwdirect, go to memory dump. Enter fff00000 without "h" and size 100000 without "h", press dump.
Right click into window, select all, right click again, copy. Paste as new file into winhex. (Open winhex and press Shift + insert key) Make sure ASCII-hex is selected. Save file and upload, please!
To get Hwdirect to run under 64 bit, press F8 at startup and disable driver enforcement. This will last for one session only and allows Hwdirect to run.
If you have licensing problems with winhex use HexWorkshop.

Your bios has to be modded manualy, plus to cut the EPA Logo, in wich I'm not that expirienced.
I've only added an ISA module containong the SLIC, which obvosly dont work.

You need to copy the files needed for the flashing procedure without changing their extensions from bin to iso.
I wolud not recomend to use the built in flash tool, insted use the awdflash utility.
About is the mod tested by someone, I dont think so.

If you like I can try some other methods on the 0804.
ASUS Crosshair
Thanks for the offer but there is now no need. I flashed the BIOS with a modified 0904 BIOS I found on this thread and now it will not boot up past the initial logo screen. It appears that this is a common problem with this board and as the BIOS chip is soldered on, its now a paperweight! I have used ASUS boards for 10 years now but after all my other problems with this board and reading the ASUS forums, I will never buy another ASUS board ever again.
I've just ordered a cheap Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 to get me going again, so I may need a SLIC BIOS for that when it arrives;)
Thanks once again for all your hard work, MK.

Just a detail, you have to rename the file (.ROM) of the bios before flashing. If you dont you won't be able to flash. Anyway it's an error from Asus, the original file can' be flashed too ... I suggest 0601.ROM, it worked nice for me :D

Please, I appreciate all the help I can get and if I am posting this on the wrong section let me know where I can post it and also receive my apologize for doing so. I was thinking about purchasing a USB floppy drive. Can the BIOS be recovered with it, or must it definitely be a "normal" one?

Interesting! The first ISA mod that doesn't work at Gigabyte bios!
Have you tried to use the ordinary FLASH895.EXE, which is usually provided by Gigabyte to update the bios instead of the new flashpi.exe?
Please make sure that you've updated the mod, not accidentally the original again.
If the ISA mod doesn't work anyway, we have to do a OEM7 mod, which could lead to that S3 issue again...
<Options> of flashspi.exe :
/C - Clear DMI Data after BIOS Update
/D - Load CMOS Defaults after BIOS Update
/E - Clear CMOS after BIOS Update
/R - Reboot System after BIOS Update
/S - Save Original BIOS Image to Disk
Additionally you can save the applied mod of Fzeven with /S option and upload it again to check if you've lost the ISA module. (Prevention of Gigabyte?)
Link to mod removed. It doesn't work!!!
Check for a possible resume from S3 sleep activation issue.

You surely have consulted your manual already. No instructions how to get back the original (second) bios? What about Gigabyte support? (Email).
Have you tried to remove battery, power cord?
Usually you get into dual bios setup by clearing CMOS via jumper......

Yes. The symptoms are the same as http://forums.mydigitallife.info/sho...29&postcount=5 but this method didn't help. Thanks anyway.
Hmm, too bad. I feel really sorry. I've checked my mod again. There is no error. I couldn't know before that it leads to that issue, of course. This bios is picky.
All other Gigabyte bioses so far were easy to modify.

Should i remove that softmod before flashing with modded bios or afterward??

Also where can i get Sapphire OEM logos?
Please answer me someone, should i remove softmod first then flash the modded bios or it's safe to remove after flashing or the flashing itself will remove that softmod??:eek:
I am waiting for this until i won't do any flashing to risk my activation;)

You can flash your bios with or without the softmod, the flash procedure wont be afected.
After succesiful flash remove the softmod and you will stay activated.
That is, if the emulated SLIC and the SLIC from the bios are from the same manufacturer.
If not, all you have to do is install the cert acording to the SLIC in your bios.
