View Full Version : This is no request thread! HP COMPAQ bioses, how to modify the bios?

Emergency BIOS Recovery
1/ Grab the bios file from www.hp.com (http://www.hp.com/#Support).
2/ Copy the bios file to the floppy disk. If it's Rom.bin it needs to be renamed to the series of your system. Eg: 68DDU.BIN
3/ Switch on system and hit either the Win+B or four-arrows on bootup,
4/ Num-lock LED will start flashing and if you have the USB floppy attached it will start reading the file. If it stops reading the file after a few secs then there is something wrong with the file and/or naming.
It is possible to put a similar system's (X3100, ICH8M) bios on your system. eg: 6710b on 6910p. Though if the keyboard controllers are different then it remaps the keys making it harder to hit Win+B or four arrows. Consider holding down as many keys as possible on the keyboard if needing to again do a recovery.
Latest 6710b bios has newer 1585 X3100 vidoe bios. How to grab that an insert it into other systems using vbios 1471?
If can figure out where the bios stores parameters (NVRAM?) can then just modify the NVRAM to alter hidden bios parameters.
6710B bios has the SATA Native enabled/disabled option.
It was a couple of days ago when I was reading here last time....
I need a short update.
-override state , nobody is able to set it to enable, right?
-official biosupdate from SLIC2.0 to SLIC 2.1? An example found, I guess no?
The future of bioses: (to hide special tools from the public..only effective protection.....)
What about that odd uniflash? Is it compatible?
What I still don't get: Why are there still 2 SLICs inside the bios? One at the protected area would be enough....
At other Phoenix bioses I've found similar matter. There is written a SLIC Marker onto the chip using special tools (LENOVO). The biosupdate itself doesn't contain the SLIC marker...anyway, we can mod them, since we are able to decompose and rebuild the modules.......
Thanks...

Cause the bios needs to be flashed twice, i dont know why but i made my own experiment replacing repetitive strings whit FFFFF, result, boot but send that error message, maybe it make some kind of check i don´t know really, anyway i try the vpro command and doesn't work on my 6710b, so is there any other test-alternative to check?
sebus
08-28-2009, 12:30 PM
I am sure vpro has nothing to do with anything, as it is related to Intel processor and ie 6715b which is AMD based has the same double slic BIOS that can not be "updated" to 2.1 in any way
6715b does NOT have vpro, hence my statement

Finally found a old post with tools and info that the DMI could be mirrored on HDD.....anything useful?

Hi, Yen!
What do you think about it (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=117662#post117662).
Is this a serious problem, or not?
P.S.
I've tried UniflashRE ver. 1.47re build 08 (http://www.rom.by/UniflashRE/UniflashRE_1.47re.08.zip) -> it's not compatible...
Something interesting can be found here (http://www.allservice.ro/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52&highlight=speg), but
SPEG is a standalone programer,
it wont be executed on that machine so is not bound to any limitations.
ATMEL protection is nothing like that you saw in those messages.
In fact the flash has a sector by sector protection that
can be disabled one by one or globaly.
As I said, my software is able to read/write/unlock/erase
any ATMEL serial flash. The chip must be taken off from
the board and programmed using an interface and the SPEG program.
so, it's the same solution as was described here (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=118622#post118622)...

Has anyone tested uniflash and flashrom (http://www.coreboot.org/Flashrom) (Linux). Flashrom lists the AT25DF321 as supported using SPI interface.

Is there a guide on how to mod Phoenix bios?
engage16
08-29-2009, 04:03 PM
Its fairly simple to mod a Pheonix bios with only one SLIC marker, but the majority of the new bioses have a second occurence of a SLIC and for some reason it seems to be hardware locked...

Unfortunately if you find 2 SLIC tables in your BIOS file you will never make the upgrade as the zone F0000 to FFFFF is protected against any modification in the BIOS chip.
You say NEVER...
but what about this:
I've notice that the status register on the Electronic ID print screen is set to 0 and should be set to 1 to be in accordance with page 14 of the memory data sheet (http://www.winbond.com/NR/rdonlyres/213525E5-DDD8-40DB-9458-DAADF1E201B8/0/W25X32V.pdf) (protected zone 3F0000 to 3FFFFF ==> BP0=1 BP1=0 BP3=0)
Does it mean the protection is managed by some other software mechanism in the motherboard.

whether it can somehow help?

Hi, TTAV134
Wow~ Finally, I made it!
Thans a lot!
I got HPBI103.EXE and HPBI108.EXE in a chinese web site.
When try HPBI108.EXE first, I got an error message 'not supported machine.'
I launched the command 'hpbi103 read slp', it said 'SLP : disabled'
So, I typed 'hpbi103 write slp on'.
Finally, SLP state was changed to enabled!
But there is no SLIC table as ever after first reboot.
So I flash the latest bios one more time.
After flash, my laptop has SLIC 2.1 table finally!
I enabled SLP on my FreeDOS 6720s and when i wanted to reflash the BIOS i got message says that new BIOS is different to that i have on system, and continuing is strongly not recomended. Is this normal message or i have to stop here?

SLP enabled have nothing to see with your error message.
Are you sure you'r using the right bios package, where does it come from?
Give us bios links, and print screen of HPQFlash showing bios versions and error message.

1- Send a print screen of slic table made with SLIC DUMP TOOLKIT (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=6925) (made in china:D)
2- remove all loaders
3- Use opatool (http://www.box.net/shared/5f9be4l5lb) for activation or make a manual activation as describe in chapter "F-a. Install a certificate" and "F-b. Install a key" from this place http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=7126.

hi,
@ HP COMPAQ BIOS MODERS
When making a change with HPBI103, the affected zone of the BIOS is 000000 to 000A67.
I've identify the SLP on/off flag at address 0001A4 (00--> slp off, FF---> slp on) and other informations (see attached file)
It could be interesting to compare our experience of the informations contained in this zone.
For that you need HWDIRECT (http://www.sendspace.com/file/aj0pj1) , then choose DUMP memory, start address fff00000, size 100000 for a 1024ko bios, press DUMP, save the file and compare changes with an hex editor.

You have to remove all loader and then update bios if you still got that message
It mean you update wrong bios.bin file.

Parallel port eeprom burner - AT26DF321 listed as supported
Circuit diagram (http://www.volny.cz/rayer/elektro/spipgm.htm) Easy setup if you have a parallel port/cable. 4x150ohm resistors, 1mF cap, and a few wires.
SPIPGM.ZIP software for this (http://www.volny.cz/rayer/programm/programe.htm#SPIPGM) eeprom burner
A cheap way to burn the SLIC 2.1 table on your system *if* you can access the serial eeprom bios chip. Some systems have this socketted.

Nope. Even if you insert it somewhere, you have to alter the RSDT/XSDT tables to point to it..Not possible AFAIK...

I have a brand new G60-458DX which has the Insyde bios. The latest release is dated Aug 18, 2009 but RW Everything still shows SLIC 2.0. Is RW report correct or is HP abandoning Windows 7 on G60? It's puzzling that they would release a new bios and not bother with updating the SLIC version.
Anyone in Denmark that can reprogram my 6710b BIOS? :-)

It's frustrating..we've got the tools to enable even a SLIC2.1 at some models, but we cannot manage to override that protected area?
Also we have developed WoW7 originally for those HPQ bioses.....
As soon as the phoenix mod tool developement is finished I'll come to here again......it's probably 'just a flag', too....but even if identified we need to write it at EEPROM....
To bad I cannot play with that, I don't own such a Notebook....I would try all the tools.. also some HDD DMI erasing tools......

hi,
I've tried all the tools from your prevous link (except HDD DMI tool), hpbi103 is the best one for my 6910p. I've put my bios chip on a socket under the keyboard, so i can try hazardous changes in bios with minimum risks.
My knowledge of DMI protocol is not sufficient to hack SMBIOS table or other part of eeprom and find the protection flag if it exist.

I used TTAV134's in place method used here http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=106203&postcount=91... And due to the fact my bios has two SLIC markers nothing much happened... So I took the .wph bios file that I had already manually modified using HxD and opened it in Pheonix BIOS Editor 2.2.1.3 and changed the DMI String that tells me what brand of notebook I'm running. Simple text edit that allows me to rebuild the bios, it rebuilt with no errors... I then ran the WinPhlash64 program and had no checksum errors and no issues updating the BIOS and everything appears to be working with SLIC 2.1...
Getting ready to do a reinstall of Win7 to verify everything works correctly... Will report back...
If it works correctly, Ill repeat the process and take proper details of each step, but I figured the expirenced modders should be able to decipher my ramble...
Edit: Thanks to everyone who has posted in these threads, I've learned so much in the past year about SLIC and bios etc....
Edit: Confirmed to be working!!!! Can't guarantee this process will work on all machine though...

The HPQ bioses are completely different in structure. In fact we cannot really mod HPQ bioses. We can replace an existing SLIC, that's all.
At Phoenix bioses we can decompose the entire bios and mod any code we want to.
Phoenix bioses:
Phoenix old style
Phoenix new style
(Phoenix) Award
These three are really modifiable.
HPQ-Phoenix
DELL-Phoenix
Replacement of uncompressed code (SLIC) only.

Hi,
I have an HP 2510P. Is that an HPQ-Phoenix BIOS or is it a modable one? There is no hint for the manufactorer in the BIOS.
Is there anything I can provide to help you guys?

hi,
Here is the result of my last investigations:
When disassembling an old version of HPQFLash I've discovered an hidden command line switch /mfg , this hidden command and others are still used in newer versions:
HPQFlash.exe usage
HPQFlash [-s] [-u] [-a] *[-v] *[-log -l] *[-mfg -m] [-pPasswordFile] [-fROMCABFile] *[-cBAKUPBIOSFile] [-?]
-u : (silent mode only) microcode update.
-s : Silent mode
-a : (silent mode only) always flash, regardless of date/version comparison.
-p : specify encrypted password file created with the HPQPswd Utility version 2.0 or later.
-f : specify ROM CAB file. Default is ROM.CAB in same dir as exe.
-? : display usage.
Note that there is no space after the -f , -p and -c switchs.
File paths which contain spaces must be enclosed in double quotes.
* Hidden commands:
-l : create more informations in HPQFLash.log
-m : or -mfg ?? to be tested
-c : Backup BIOS file to EFI Partition (-s and -a are turned on automatically when -c switch is used)
-v : ?? to be tested
Please pay attention to the /mfg switch (mfg like Manufacturing) can be equivalent with /X = reset CMOS/ECMOS to factory defaults of rompaq.exe
or, combined with other switches can be a way to override protection.
Please report.
You can also download a patched version of HPQFlash Version 4.2.5.3 http://www.sendspace.com/file/bg0q51, I've use an other approach in this version to override the ROM signature checking.

I have an HP 2510P. Is that an HPQ-Phoenix BIOS or is it a modable one? There is no hint for the manufactorer in the BIOS.
2510P=68MSP. It's a HP specific non-Phoenix bios in the same series as 68xxx 6510b/6710b/6910p series. We all have the same issues - cannot mod the bios wifi whitelist (http://www.wimsbios.com/phpBB2/topic9388-90.html) AND cannot change the SLIC table due to write protection.
Santa Rosa (ICH8M I/O, X3100 graphics) 68M series HP bios
2230S - 68PHU. (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=au&prodNameId=3764978&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3764975&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093#120)
2510P - 68MSP (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3355634&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3355633&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093#120). PATA primary HDD and optical drive
2710P - 68MOU (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3355645&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3355644&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1059#120). PATA primary HDD. No optical drive. Uses IDE redirection to USB optical drive.
6510B/6710B - 68DDU (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3355661&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3355650&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093#120).
6910p - 68MCU (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3357378&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3357377&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093#120). SATA Native enable in bios. Latest X3100 vbios.
If you want to try to mod the bios can do so. Best method imho is to copy the modded bios file onto a USB floppy as 68MSP.bin, restart holding down WIN+B and let it flash it. Yes, this works with 2510P/2710P/6510B/6710B/6910p as long as you name the file correctly. You can actually flash other systems bios onto yours by naming the ROM same as your series. Only recommended if you are experimenting with different parts of code from different series (eg: 6910b has newest X3100 vbios which HP haven't released in previous series) AND can do eeprom recovery via burner if need to.
Ensure you have a hwdirect dump before trying this. If your modding alters the bootblock recovery code such that WIN+B no longer works, then you'll need an eeprom burner to get your bios back.
TTAV134 - since you have the eeprom burner could you try a similar series DV6000 bios? I hope the keyboard controllers are compatible. If can get a phoenix bios on there instead then have a lot more modding capability. HP have really locked down their business system's bios.

As I promised, even though we were talking about two different things apparently....
Here's my guide to modifying Phoenix BIOSes from HP but it should work with other Phoenix based bioses... It obviously comes with no promises and no guarantees. I'm in NO WAY responsible if you brick your laptop and cannot recover it...
1. Create a folder on your desktop titled 'Bios Editing' this is where you can save all the file that we need to download to edit a bios...
2. Download the SLIC 2.1 bin collection from here http://forums.mydigitallife.info/attachment.php?attachmentid=2455&d=1251237712
3. Extract the 'Hp[HPQOEM-MPC-HPQ]2.1.BIN' to the 'Bios Editing' folder created in step 1 (note you need WinRAR or similar program)
4. Download HxD from this location and install it. http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD
5. Download Phoenix BIOS Editor (PBE) from this location. http://rapidshare.com/files/275633826/PBE__2.2.13.zip
6. YOU need to download and open your appropriate BIOS for your computer... Mine is availible here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-73955-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=2100&product=3818737&lang=en yours will obviously different
7. The HP bios will then extract and begin to run... When you reach the point where it shows the old and new bios versions proceed to step 8.
8.Open HxD and open the HP SLIC from the Bios editing folder you created earlier
9. Open your C:/ drive then the SWSetup folder and look for the SP folder the utility creates (most recent date modified)
10. inside that folder should be two folders one is winphlash and the second is winphlash64. open the one thats appropriate for your OS (the one ending in 64 is for 64bit OSes).
11. Look for your BIOS file, it should end in either .WPH or .ROM and then click and drag that file into HxD
12. Now upto select the tab 'Search' and select Find and search for 'HPQ'
13. A few characters previous to that is 'SLICv' that is the beginning of your marker. Note on the left where the Hex chart is, it has selected '53 4C 49 43 76' when you drag over the 'Slicv' characters. all the edits have to be done in the Hex coding...
14.so now switch back to the Hp slic 2.1 file in HxD and select all and copy it (the hex code on the left starting with '53 4c 49 ........'
15. Then go back to the Bios tab and starting at and including the hex code of '53 4c 49 ...' click and drag down to a length of 176 (at the bottom of HxD window) you shouLd end at "67 BA 1C". And hit the delete key on your
keyboard and accept the changes... Then with out moving the cursor paste the SLIC you copied to your keyboard in the same exact place (accept the changes)...
16. Now you can click "File, save" and close out HxD... And you can also click 'No' on the Winphlash program to close it out from rewriting the bios as it is not fully edited yet.
17. Now we need to open PBE (as Administrator), and open the BIOS file we just edited manually. it should be in C:\swsetup\sw#####\and whichever version you used... (ending in 64 for 64bit OSes)... There will be two options... a .wph and a .wph.bak open the .wph one click okay on all errors that come up
18. a bunch of tiled windows should come up inside PBE. select the 'DMI Strings' one... (this is where we can safely edit a text line so we can rebuild safely)
19. I suggest changing the 'System Product Name'... I changed mine from "Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook PC" to "Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook" and i suggest you do something similar... Nothing major just a few letters is best...
20. now click 'file' and select "Build BIOS" and it should come up as "build is okay" you can read the log if you want to.... but then close out of PBE... When asked to save the new ROM select yes and then click save... when asked if you what to overwrite, select yes...
21.Now if you go back to your c:\swsetup\sw##### folder from earlier where you selected the folder for the appropriate winplash version you should notice a file named 'flasher.exe' run it... its going to ask to overwrite a 'bios.bak' file click yes...
21.Let it do its thing and when it comes up with the window "click yes to continue" click yes... It will now rewrite your entire bios... your computer will shut down and you will have to turn it back on (hopefully no issues arise)
22. You should now be running SLIC 2.1 to check that downlad SLIC DUMP TOOLKIT from here and run it as administrator... http://rapidshare.com/files/276254393/SLIC_Dump_ToolKit.EXE the SLIC version will be shown in the top right corner...
All files are property of their original authors, I share no responsibilty if something arises from their use. And I would like to thank Yen, TTAV134, and everyone else here at MDL for teaching me how to do this and all their efforts I pieced together to make a unified guide...

Thanks a lot for your job..., but if I understood you correctly, the major change that you've made according to your previous message (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=133126#post133126) was:
changing the 'System Product Name'... I changed mine from "Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook PC" to "Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook" and i suggest you do something similar... Nothing major just a few letters is best...
So, in our case, we can do something similar:
HPIB103 write model 8510w (http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/windows7-upgrade/eligmodels.html)
HPIB103 write sku KA455UT#ABA (http://www.buy.com/prod/hp-8510w-mobile-workstation-intel-core-2-duo-t8300-2-4ghz-15-4-wsxga/q/loc/101/207683215.html)

because, according to TTAV134's investigations (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=118622#post118622)
Does it mean the protection is managed by some other software mechanism in the motherboard.

there is no truly write protection...at least for HP COMPAQ 6910p...
We just have to find a way to access the owner (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=117662#post117662) of that F0000h-FFFFFh region... (maybe I'm wrong)

hi Russia,
I agree, nothing new, this guy have use PBE only to rewrite a checksum in bin file, perhaps he don't know there is an advance option of winflash to avoid this checking.
Lets come back to Rompaq BIOS's, I've spend a couple of weeks to search an hypothetical flag in the beginning of the bios area starting from 0000 to FFFF (the firts 64k) accessible with Hwdirect, I've first made a cross checking with the dump of an other "protected" bios to eliminate identical values or values affects by bios settings. after I've made a cross checking with a NC6400 (non protect) dump to isolate different values. Result: 10 octets
With an eprom programmer I've test one by one this different octets with no success to override write protection.
Anyway for those interest by VPRO, the address A67 is involved in vpro activation:
A67=0 VPRO OFF
A67=1 VRPO ON
A67=FF VPRO uncommited
See Bios_infos.txt for more details
conclusion:
imho there is no flag involved in write protection in this zone.
to be continued

I've just bought a used HP COmpaq 6730s running BIOS F.05 07/29/2008
This has a SLIC 2.0 entry and appears to have two occurances of the OEM marker
I've upgraded to the latest bios from HP F.11 08/03/2009
hey presto ..... now SLIC 2.1
woo hooo !!!!! :D

Hi,
it seems I've found something interesting in 8710p(w) BIOS's...
I've just compared BIOS's ver. F.06 (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38103.html) (sp38103 - HPQFlash (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38103.exe), sp38104.exe - Rompaq (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38104.exe)) and F.0B (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38491.html) (sp38491 - HPQFlash (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38491.exe), sp38492 - Rompaq (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38492.exe)) and...
those "write protected" regions (F0000h-FFFFFh) are different...
ENHANCEMENTS:
- Adds option in F10 Setup to enable or disable
the modem.
NOTE: Restore F10 Setup to the default setting
after upgrading the system BIOS.
- Adds support for new Intel Processors.
- Adds a BIOS boot block update that eliminates a
potential security vulnerability.
NOTE: The previous version of the system BIOS cannot
be reinstalled after system BIOS version F.0B has been
installed.
So, this "write protected" region can be overwritten by HPQFlash.exe v4.1.2.1 and rompaq v4.6d and no DMI editing needed!!!
It seems like there's must be a byte inside .bin file that allows overwriting a bootblock area???
PS:
I tried to flash BIOS with F.06 version -> error "BIOS too old and not compatible with current system configuration".
I tried to flash F.0B version with in-memory patch -> does not work (slic 2.0)... It seems the flag (byte inside .bin file) is no longer working (if it exists)?
and ver.txt for F.0B BIOS the same as for all other
_ROM_ 68MAD v0F.0B 02/12/2008
0x00000000 0x00010000
0x000F0000 0x00010000
Am I really had a chance to upgrade slic by a BIOS updating from F.06 to F.0B version (or from F.06 to F.0F for example)???
Here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/t74fwq) are all 68MAD BIOS's (.bin files only)

The memory patch will not work, as by then the flag had already been read by the flashing program.
And the "downgrade" also must be possible (after all the newer BIOS did NOT make changes to hardware!, it is still the same), it must be another flag or date inside the .bin file
So it is "only" to find what it is... (easier to say than do)

There was some bootblock update at some version. Trying to downgrade to the older bootblock does not work. Even emergency bios downgrade using the floppy will not do it.
If anyone is good at using IDA Pro, they may consider using the decompressor supplied with ADDDC2 (http://30656.linkredirect.onetwomax.de/) to disassemble it to see what it is doing. It can't be any . The bootblock code will be where the bios update name is, eg: 68DDU.bin
It appears the machine uses some sort of hidden SPI interface to write the bios. flashrom under Linux does not pick it up even though it claims support of the AT25DF321 chip.
I would suggest the flasher (bootblock/HPQflash/Rompaq) reads the bios file and looks for markers as to what areas are to be written and what are to not be written. Analysing the bootblock code may give some clues.

Hi,
I was trying to solve one of the 'last mysteries'. We've tried to replace the SLIC2.0 but there are checksum problems. Also there are tutorials how to edit the whitelist to support own Wlan devices.
I don't know how many are still interested in that.....
Here are good sources: some in German

I make this sticky......to see if there is still interest and members who want to do further tests...I didn't want that the info gets lost.;)

Hi Yen,
We are here back, hopefully your project of automatic tools for phoenix bios is completed or nearby.
It is good to start again with COMPAQ bios, and as you know you mod one bios for me that is for HP COMPAQ 6510b, but unfortunately i failed to flash it because of the probelm of the CRC and rom sig.
the original bios file is here:

Thank you for your efforts
you can reflash the modded bios by the HPQFlash.exe.

hi guys,
many thanks to you for learning a lot of bios during the last day while reading your posts for finding a solution for my hp 8710p.
But now I tried wow7, it worked and w7 is activated.
But for me is still one question - why don't you succeed with SLIC 2.1 for hp 8710p bios F.0F and wow7 does it?

If I understand corectly with a loader the bios is still SLIC 2.0, the loader just POKE the memory on the fly , you you have a virtual 2.1

It is like asking why the sun is yellow.
WOW7 is software only mod, BIOS mod is to write the software (.bin file) to the hardware (BIOS chip)
And this last action proves impossible so far with HP Business laptops (some of them)

Try: If you decompress these two bioses you'll get as last file a file named FFFC8BDC.rom.
It's just cut off the biosfile from offset C8BDC, it gets the filename FFFC8BDC, because it will be its address at 1Mbyte bios, stored at EEPROM, that's quite logical...compare them...I'm quite sure the first 4bytes (before the byte 01) and probably the other four bytes (before the second 01 byte) are checksums or addresses....and I guess the first 20h bytes are the header of the module.....will do more research.....
I've compared FFFC8BDC.rom files for all available 8710p(w) BIOS's... and drew attention to the 00h-33h area of that files (it's clearly seen when comparing (http://www.sendspace.com/file/hxra3p) F.06 and F0.B versions when BB was updated)...
yes, the first 4bytes (before the byte 01) are different in each new version and it's seems, this is a "checksum" for update the main block of the BIOS...
the other four bytes (before the second 01 byte) (and also another 5 bytes: 08h, 0Eh-10h and 1C) remained unchanged before a BB updating... it's sems, they are changes each time the BB is updating.
There are also two types of dates inside .bin file:
the main block date (changes each time with the new BIOS version) affects on the first 4bytes (before the byte 01);
the BootBlock date (changes each time with the new BB version), I guess, it's affects on the other bytes that was changed in the 00h-33h area.
Maybe trying to downgrade BB to older version, HPQFlash (or rompaq) compares current values of those bytes with a corresponding bytes of the BIOS image file, and gives an error...?
Anyway, if we cann't to calculate correct values for those bytes, there's one way - is try to patch HPQFlash or rompaq that they do not check the BB version (maybe I'm wrong...)

Open the rom.bin with an hex editor and search the string HPQOEM, if you find it twice (and you will) you have 2 sclic tables.

Maybe we can do something whit winphlash, i was checkeing a bios for a friend and accidentally i begin a backup, i guess it didn't do any but it create a 2mb bios.bak file then i try to flash it but it say something about incorrect size and checksums, lately whit the same file i try in dos whit phlash16 and say the same thing so maybe we are not limited to HPqflash and Rompaq.exe, we only need the correct tables for winphlash for the creation of a correct bios.bak and a bios mod.
On the device section of winphlash it shows a w25x16 512x4k chip and a mx25i1605a 32x64 chip, it could be the security chip? cause the first one its a windbond chip, i asume that its a chip like the one updated by ttav134 on its 6910p using an eeprom programmer.

Seems we are dealing with this: Modular bios update mechanism (http://www.sendspace.com/file/qn9don) (source here (http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/7213152/description.html))
Is there a digital signature at DFBE0h-DFC07h? ... it's changes every time when BB (MBU package at the enhancement space (Box 470) F0000h-FFFFFh) is updating.
40 bytes -> DSA signature...best seen when comparing 6910p (http://www.sendspace.com/file/4wnd8d) F.10 and F.13 FFFC8BDC.rom files (before and after the BB updating).
Package Authentication
As noted, the MBU (modular BIOS update) update process may include
package authentication. According to an embodiment, the MBU
package may contain authentication information that uniquely
identifies the source of the MBU package.
For example, the authentication information may occur according to
a public-private key pair. A public key may be stored by the BIOS
in the default space 110 (FIG. 1). The newly received MBU package
may be signed with a private key. Using the public key, the processor
may examine the contents of the MBU package and the signature that
accompanies the MBU package to authenticate the package.
Success indicates that the MBU package was published by an authentic
source. Failure may indicate that the MBU package was not published
by an authentic source, that the MBU package somehow was corrupted after
publication or that some other error occurred. The BIOS may terminate
the MBU update process if authentication fails.
According to an embodiment, the public key-private key pair may be
based on one of the well-known signature algorithms such as RSA or
DSA signature systems. Other signature algorithms are known.
During implementation, publishers of MBU packages are expected
to maintain control of private keys. Thus, a successful authentication
against the signature included with the MBU package should indicate
that the MBU package originated from anauthorized source.
If validation succeeds, the BIOS begins to write the MBU package to
the enhancement space (Box 470). At the conclusion of the write, the BIOS
determines whether the update succeeds (Box 480). If not, the BIOS returns
an MBU update failure (Box490) and clears the MBU update flag from BIOS
(Box 500). Otherwise, the BIOS may set the enhancement flag (Box 510) and
returns a status flag indicating successful storage (Box 520).
Once the enhancement table has been amended, the method may terminate.
It's a good idea to calculate a public key for a modded MBU (F0000h-FFFFFh area with a SLIC, upgraded to 2.1 version)..., but it is impossible without knowing a private key...
Further patching of rompaq.exe and hpqflash.exe is useless, because "...the processor (or the current BIOS) may examine the contents of the MBU package and the signature that accompanies the MBU package to authenticate the package..."
So, the question can be closed (?)
Is a bios with SLIC2.1, for a HP 6710b Laptop possible? - And where?
Don't know how old that is but just flashed a 6730s with the new bios from HP and bang problem solved slic 2.1 table with HPQOEM already there.

no there isn't. the reason seems to be...
Advanced Security Features of Intel ® vPro ™ Technology - http://download.intel.com/technology/itj/2008/v12i4/paper10.pdf?utm_source=Intel+vPro+Technology+Heart beat+Communication&utm_campaign=1719d50cae-External_Heartbeat3_06_2009&utm_medium=email
Namely:
At the beginning of the flash (that is, at address 0) there is an area called the flash descriptor. This area describes the partitioning of the flash into regions, and defines the owner of that region (see Figure 1).
The flash controller is responsible for enforcing the partitioning of the flash according to the contents of the flash descriptor. This ensures that the Intel AMT region of the flash is accessible by the Intel AMT processor only.
The flash descriptor also contains the access capabilities to the flash descriptor itself. If the flash descriptor remains open to write operations, the
protection on the other regions is of course useless. Therefore, at the end of the manufacturing process, the OEM must lock the flash descriptor region. From that point on, it cannot be rewritten. This precludes any possibility of access to the flash from regular host-based software.

This is my erroneous assumption (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=117662#post117662) already has been refuted (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=118622#post118622)!
Now I am suppose that the true reason lies in the Modular bios update mechanism (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=140523#post140523).
Note, that here's no answer to a question: "How can I upgrade my doubleSLICed BIOS to 2.1 version?" or "Why can not I do this?", but another suggestion only!
Indeed, look:
According to an embodiment, a BIOS package may include not only
the BIOS update itself but also associated validation and revision information.
The installer 220 may have a role in validation and revision comparison. For
revisions, prior to installation, the installer 220 may compare the revision
information of the BIOS update with revision information (if any) that may be
associated with previously stored system BIOSs, those stored in the default
space 110 (FIG. 1) and those stored in the enhancement space 120 (FIG. 1).
In this embodiment, if the comparison determines that the BIOS update
provided in the package is not more current than a copy previously stored,
the installer 220 may terminate the installation process.
So, we have "...a validation and revision comparison"... two times! For "...the default space 110 (FIG. 1) and those stored in the enhancement space 120 (FIG. 1)".
You can see this in any hpqflash.log file, created with "hpqflash.exe -l" switch..., and you can, using a patched hpqflash.exe, to write any hex data to the default space or downgrade to a previouse BB version, even there's a
NOTE: The previous version of the system BIOS cannot
be reinstalled after system BIOS version F.XX has been
installed.
but for the default space only! (you've to increase a BIOS version in a ver.txt file and change the 1-st byte to "F9" in your 68xxx.bin file for a previouse BB version, at least for 8710p so).
Therefore, for the enhancement space involved another validation mechanism... and it's can be a package authentication (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=140523#post140523) with a digital signature.
So, at the moment there is only one solution (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=138884#post138884).

It is on the Windows 7 upgrade list from HP http://h41112.www4.hp.com/promo/win7web/uk/en/eligmodels.html.
So it is highly likely that it is 2.1. Best way to find out is to download the latest bios and look for slic in the code.

Hi, this is a long thread, and parts of it hard to follow, so forgive me for not having read all of it. I just wanted to know if older type HP/Compaq BIOSes can be modded, and where I can find the instructions to do it. The BIOS I want to mod is for the old HP xw6000 workstation. It has a dual xeon motherboard with a Compaq BIOS that was last updated in 2005. You can download the BIOS here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=295779&prodNameId=295781&swEnvOID=1093&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=wk-28892-1
If you want to see what the workstation looks like, here are a couple of links:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/desktops/46126/hp-workstation-xw6000-aa772a
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11485_na/11485_na.HTML
Later on HP brought out a newer model of the same workstation with much the same spec (and the same BIOS) but different looks that you can see here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=295779
Anyways, if somebody can show me how to mod this BIOS (or wants to do it for me) it will be much appreciated.

BEFORE using this manual method look the MODED BIOS's LIST (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=111460&postcount=290).
And read this HP BIOS RECOVERY PROCEDURE (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=112105&postcount=308)
SLIC 2.1 BIOS update for Laptop HP NC6400
0- download SLIC2.1 collection from Here (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=5952) and extract the file Hp[HPQOEMSLIC-MPC-HPQ]2.1.BIN
1- download HxDEN here (http://mh-nexus.de/en/programs.php)
2- download the original BIOS sp36877 (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=1847703&prodNameId=1847704&swEnvOID=2096&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ob-54183-1) this one is for HP NC6400 only
3- Once HPQFlash is launched press "Next"
4- in HxDEN: open Hp[HPQOEMSLIC-MPC-HPQ]2.1.BIN, select and copy from HPQOEMSLIC-MPCWINDOWS to the end (170 octets)
5- in HxDEN: open RAM and load HPQFlash.exe
search the string HPQOEMSLIC, select from HPQOEMSLIC-MPCWINDOWS to 1C and replace (paste) theses 170 octets
save changes and close HxDEN
6- in HPQlash windows press "Next" -> updating ROM starts
7- after rebooting SLIC 2.1 is here (check with this TOOL (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=6925))
For VISTA/WINDOWS7 HxDen has to be started as Administrator
A great thanks to all who contributes to this result.
This method can be used for other HP models, unfortunately if you find 2 occurrences of the marker (HPQOEMSLIC-MPCWINDOWS....) in your bios file like 6910p, 6710b, 6715b, the SLIC table will remain in version 2.0 after reboot.

why do you need SLP anyway? there are so many VLK CD-Keys out there that SLP is quite useless imo

Hello. I'm an HP reseller and I think I can give a possible reason why SLIC table is not updated when you flash the bios on professionnal HP desktop & laptops.
HP has a special reselling program called "Top config" where you can customize your computer (you select a chassis for example a 8710w laptop and you can choose your processor, memory..etc) you can also select your operating system.
in 2008 whe purchase dx2400s via top config. They were delivered with Vista pre-installed , activated thru SLIC 2.0. One day we decided to purchase the same model but Free-dos. We where unable to activate a Vista license because there where no slic in the bios.
I think HP handles BIOS separately in the production chain. For stocks sales & "top values" (best price or big stock) they include the bios slic according to the current topseller OS (previously Vista and since june Seven) for "top config" sales they include the bios according to what the customer purchased. Doing like that HP is sure that a FreeDos model will not became a Vista one without purchasing the license (~110€ rebate)
This could be the reason why slic table are not handled by the flashing tools on "top config" models like :
8510/8710/6530/6730/6930 laptops
dc5750/5850/57000/5800/7900 desktops
xw4400/4550/4600 workstations
I recently sold an xw4600 that was slic 2.1 - mine is only 2.0 and there is no trace of slic table in bios files. We also have xw4550 & 4400 at work : no slic in bios files also :( I checked on dc5850 same problem. Of course no slic with HxDen.
The only solution seems to find an alternative bios flashing tool if you don't want to use an eeprom programmer.

I tought it was good for people reading this "huge" thread to understand differences between AMI/AWARD/PHOENIX bioses and HP bioses and why Win7 loaders doen't work when you already have a slic 2.0 table that you cannot update.
You probably prefer someone asking for an HP phoenix bios mod he could build himself instead of someone like me just trying to help.

Hi,
This is not the right thread to discuss the issues related to AMI bioses.
But i will guide you and you have the right to chose:
1. you can use the SLICtool developed by Andy and replace your slic2.0 by 2.1 http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=4071
2. you can use the already moded bios from here http://www.sendspace.com/file/xkw3n8

Darmawan Salihun (http://darmawan-salihun.blogspot.com/2007/05/book-that-i-wrote-biosdisassembly.html) in his book reveals some details of the Phoenix Secure WinFlash program (describes the example of a Compaq Presario V2718WM laptop), ie he could imagine (http://www.sendspace.com/file/qx3in1) (it's a russian to english translate using google).
Before, in his book he's says, that the BIOS rom file may contain a flash program (or part of it) inside itself...
I think, if there's a something executable at the begining of E0000h-EFFFFh and F0000h-FFFFFh areas, I mean:
MZђ...This program cannot be run in DOS...
could it be the flash program, or maybe package authentication module, or something else?
And one more thing: if you'll try to downgrade to a previouse BB version (or upgrade to the next BB version) the BIOS updating occurs in two stages: 1-st in the windows enviroment, and the 2-nd - after POST, when there's a message on the screen (for 8710p):
Updating keyboard controller
Maybe on the second stage BB is loading from E0000h-EFFFFh area, verifies BB code and, if success, writes F0000h-FFFFFh area? Or why there're two idential areas?
If you're agree, can anybody disassemble this executable part (http://www.sendspace.com/file/twa33c) (E0000h-E3DBFh)? IDA detects it as Portable executable for 80386 (PE) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Executable)...

OK, so I bought a HP ProBook 4710s and I installed Windows 7 and then I used the HP tool to flash the bios from windows. Then I tried to activate it and it did not activate. I tried various loaders and none of them have worked so far.
I have read the last couple of pages and it seems that the slic 2.1 is not included in the bios update, so what can I do next?

hi,
The latest bios for HP ProBook 4710s is in sclic2.1 so you've miss something, read more and learn.
and please first check if you have a slic table with this tool http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=6925

Look, here's only one solution to upgrade your HP BIOS to SLIC 2.1, and, of course, you can try it: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=106203&postcount=91,
but you have two SLICs inside your BIOS (as other HP Pavillion DV3000 models (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=139367#post139367)), so the situation can be as was discribed here (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?p=106092#post106092)...
So, please try and report...

How should we know if you installed such an emulator or not? There is no difference between emulated and real SLIC 2.1, of course this is meaning to emulate it!

Yes, I have used WOW7 to activate Win7 sucessfully. Anyway, I think real is better than emulated, just my hobby :). Do you mean that to have real SLIC 2.1, my laptop's BIOS must be modded/flashed? Can you tell me how to do this or just give me a link to the topic in this forum? Thanks much!

Of course it's better to get the real SLIC, but I just wanted to clarify, that from Windows you cannot check with SLIC-Dump if you have emulated or real SLIC table in BIOS. Understand?
So, I downloaded the latest BIOS of your 6520s and it contains dual SLIC 2.0 table. So there is currently NO WAY for you to change it to a SLIC 2.1 table with default tools. The only way to achieve is to use an hardware programmer (not recommended).

Try to run Everest (Corporate or Ultimate) and check ACPI tables, if it is emulated Everest will mention it.. "(elumated)"
So if Everest can detect it, so can Microsoft. That's why I prefer "real" slic table other than emulated.

Everest doesn't detect bios slic's properly, yes it will tell you what version your running, 2.0 or 2.1 but the emulated tag shows up on actual slics occasionally as well as emulated ones from a loader...

Hi,
Thank you all for trying so hard. It seems to me that we would need some fresh ideas. However, I think there are still some open questions regarding current flashing procedures using memory patch.
1. I was wondering if any one of you have tried to change all three parts of slic2.1.bin (header starting with SLIC....HPQOEMSLIC-MPC..., RSA1 part and HPQOEMSLIC-MPCWINDOWS...) when using memory patch. Current procedure focuses only on the last part and ignore the header and the RSA1 part, which are also different in slic2.1.bin compared to slic2.0.bin.
2. Why are there two occurences of the slic table in the first place, if only one in the protected area is needed? As I understand, after flashing modded bios, the first slic table (Exxxx-EFFF0) is changed but not the second one?
thank you again.

I haven't taken the time to read all 70 pages of this thread, but I will share my experience with the forum. I managed to get SLIC 2.1 on my Compaq Presario desktop (which is the equivalent of an HP Pavilion) by using the HP Motherboard DMI Tattoo Utility 5.01 to update the DMI Tattoo.
I did a lot of experimentation and found out that, at least on my Compaq, there was no valid SLIC in the BIOS itself. Replacing the dummy SLIC table in the BIOS file itself with a valid SLIC and flashing it made no difference -- the same SLIC always showed up. What I discovered was that the DMI Tattoo Utility writes an encoded version of the SLIC table to the DMI area and at boot time this info is copied to the real SLIC table. The SLIC you see has nothing to do with the BIOS file that has been flashed on the machine. Earlier versions of the DMI Tattoo Utility put SLIC 2.0 in the DMI but version 5.01 installs SLIC 2.1, so once I'd updated the DMI with the Tattoo utility I had no problems activating Windows 7.
If you're finding that your BIOS ROM file either contains no SLIC yet one appears after the machine has started, or that modifying the SLIC table in the ROM and flashing it doesn't change anything, the solution I found might be the one you need.
I do not have an HP or Compaq laptop to investigate but there does exist a similar DMI tool for those machines, so they may require a similar method.
Sorry if I'm repeating information that has already been posted here, but I could find absolutely no information on this subject when I did this back at the beginning of August.

Hello TTAV134,
many thanks for this work and for the modded bios. I will not need to flash it, because I will get a legal key for Win 7, but it is nice to have when something goes wrong.
My question is:
Will this method of modifying the bios work when I want to change the vendor and subsys string of wifi cards? I am thinking about upgrading to 802.11n , but HP has a whitelisting of wifi cards in the bios.
If so, can I use your slic 2.1 bios and modify it again, or is there a reason to use original bios?
Thank you!

Maybe there can be something usefull?
I have been trying brute-force on the password but I stopped after getting the iso file. What is in the zip is the readme, the pdf that is posted above and the exe. I think the exe contains the iso for cd and img for floppy.

Just thought I'd mention that some laptops sold by HP around 2008/2009 might have an updated bios available for download from HP that will upgrade your slic 2.0 bios to 2.1. There was an update available for my laptop at least. It wasn't announced on the page that it would update the slic from 2.0 to 2.1.
You have to check that for yourself once you've installed the latest bios.
Worth a check.

See How to > HP BIOS MiniPCI Fix- nc6000/others (http://www.wimsbios.com/phpBB2/topic9388-75.html). Worth seeing too if there are any tools that allow you to flash the VID/FID on the WiMax 5350 card so that it's seen as a whitelisted device.

Of course, there is a software solution to overwrite the F0000h-FFFFFh region, including the SLIC area, but currently it seems impossible for this forum thread, and I do not know a place better to discuss this issue...
Breaking news: HP Eligible Models (http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/windows7-upgrade/eligmodels.html) list was updated...
Some models were added, at least 8710p, 8510p..., and some models were removed, at least 8510w, 550...
So, Windows® 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP works for HP Eligible Models certain time (maybe till the required number of laptops will be realised).
It seems, a BIOS update (if it's required) for those models will be avaliable with the Upgrade Kits (https://www.hpwindows7upgrade.arvato.com/north_america/Endcustomer/) on October 22, 2009...
Wonder what constitutes the Upgrade Kit?

ICH8M's datasheet (http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/313056.pdf) has a stack of parameters that can be used to set the descriptor and alter the protected zones for bios eeprom. This relates to the SPI interface. I can't really make that much sense of it, but perhaps some others can?

First off - Thank you for all the information shared here & to all those who have shared their knowledge.
I am trying to modify the Bios of an NC4200. I have downloaded the latest bios (SP38109 (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=447354&prodNameId=447355&swEnvOID=1093&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ob-56980-1)). When I search for the specified search string, I am unable to locate it. I apologize in advance if this has been covered however I was unable to locate anything on this model when I conducted my searches.

Well - it took me 3 days, but I have read all 73 pages of this thread. My situation with my laptop, NC4200, is similar to NC6120. Slic table does not exist, so that explains why I get the error above when attempting "write SLP on".
So it seems my only choice is to use a softloader. I am curious about one thing I did find from an earlier post..HP offers "HP Upgrade Utility for Microsoft Windows Vista (Web Version) (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34397.html)" - Download Here (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=447354&prodNameId=447355&swEnvOID=1093&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ob-46790-1). I was wondering what would happen if I used this utility to upgrade from XP to Vista, would the BiosFlash included in the utility create the Slic 2.0 table...
I don't have a Vista disc, so I cant test at the moment .... so - off to get a copy of Vista to test. I wonder if it matters if its Retail Vista or if it has to be HP branded Vista OEM disc.. anyone know?

@Busykid508 : thanks for your participation but this bios is a Phoenix wich is 'standart' bios easy to mod.
This thread is talking about HP Bios made by HP on Pro models : they have particular fonctionality & tools , and some resistant models cannot be modified as the bios flash tool doesn't write the slic table and whe cannot use loaders because there's allready a slic table in the bios (2.0)
Hp must have a particular tool to write slic table in those bioses and whe are a lot searching this holly grale.

Thanks for the reply and tip andmail. Once you pointed out that bios I couldnt believe I missed that. I saw the bios folder but didnt know which one applied to my machine and then ... doh!
I couldnt use the version of HPQflash that extracted from the original download posted above. I had to use the HPQflash that came with the "latest" Bios under the NC4200 XPP section. It did flash successfully and rebooted. I confirmed the bios version but still no SLIC table. I tried again to run HPBI103 Write SLP ON but got the same error posted above (no SLIC table to enable).
I thought for sure the bios update included in this utility to upgrade HP customers from XP to Vista would create a current enough bios with a SLIC table that I could modify ... :(

Somehow HP is blocking the SLIC table because the machine was shipped without OS. Does anyone know how to undo this? I am sure its something in the BIOS that can be easily changed.
I saw some quotes about this issue on a Chinese web site, but no solutions.

No drivers needed for 8x10 series , everything is supported out of the box, except the fingerprint (downloaded package via windows update does not work..even on 8x30 series) I use UPEK Protector suite free edition instead and it work great.
However this is not the subject of this thread and there is no solution for double slic machines like 8510 or 8710 at the moment.

Latest 2530P bios adds Win7 support
2530P latest bios (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3782222&swItem=ob-76162-1&prodNameId=3782253&swEnvOID=4053&swLang=13&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=3) adds Win7 support.
Anyone with an eeprom burner want to try to deconstruct what the bios ROM file is writing to the bios? Might be able to do it by copying the 2530P bios, 68PSU.bin, onto a floppy, rename it to your series, eg: 2510P is 68MSP.bin, and do a emergency recovery bootup using WIN+B. Pull out the eeprom between reboots and look at it's data.
