Hi,

Does anyone have a HP SLIC 2.1 VMware BIOS?

The one found here http://slicbios.wikidot.com/vmware:vmware has the ASUS tables and not HP.

Darren

How exactly do you flash the vmware bios?
Hi,

You don't really flash it.

You just insert the following line in your .vmx file.

bios440.filename = "VMWAREBIOS_SLIC.ROM"

You will all be better off looking at the virtualization forum for things like this. Also remember the vmware BIOS is version dependent!

This Hp rom is great. Is there a way to add it back into the vmware-vmx.exe file to use as the main rom. Thanks

Expire? I'm using the chinese lo*der and activated...

Until MS knows a way around this and lo*der doesnt work anymore I will keep using it (for testing purposes)

Any chance of a modded ESX4(i) VM bios? (machine version 4 or 7)? :D

I cannot get this vmware-vmx.exe file to work. I have extracted it with 7zip and when I load it into reshack nothing shows like it does when loading the original file. Is this a .res file or is the download bad. Thanks Regina

Did you compare the MD5 hash? If it matches, the download is good. It is not a .res file. It is a replacement vmware-vmx.exe file that has the modded BIOS inserted into it. All you need to do is:

Download the file.
Replace the original vmware-vmx.exe with the one you downloaded. I'm pretty sure you know the location but for the sake for others:

On a 64bit system, it is located in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\x64

On a 32bit system, I THINK it is located in (not too sure about the location):
C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Workstation\bin

Of course, if you installed vmware into a different directory, you have to look for it in that diirectory. If you are unable to find it, just do a search for vmware.vmx.exe on your hard drive. Once you find it, rename the original to something like vmware-vmx.exe.bak and copy the modified vmware-vmx.exe into that folder. Dont forget to remove the lines you inserted in the .vmx configuration file and the .rom file.

I used Restorator 2007 (IMO, I think it's better than Reshack) to insert the modded BIOS into the vmware-vmx.exe. I did notice it does not open correctly in Reshack. Use Restorator 2007 if you want to play with it.:)

Thanks. I am using vmware version 6.5.1 build 126130. After I place it into the directory and try to start a vm, vmware says it cannot continue make sure I have all rights and the directories are ok. VM player does the same thing. I checked the md5 and yes it was good.

Maybe because the vmware-vmx.exe was for the version I have which is 6.5.2 Build: 156735. Upload your version of vmware-vmx.exe and I'll insert it in there.

You are probably getting a error something like "could not get vmx86 driver version". This is known bug in the newest version of vmware. The work around for this at the moment is to run vmware with administrative rights. You are likely to encounter this error message even if you are not using a modded vmware-vmx.exe. Here is a tut anyway.

Rename your modded vmware bios to whatever.res or whatever.txt
Open vmware-vmx.exe in resorator.
Double click "binaries" and right click "6006".
Highlight "assign..." and you will get a single cascaded menu label "assign to..." and select it.
Select your modded vmware bios file.
You are done. Save it and have fun.

Let me know if you need additional help. BTW, the vmware version 6.5.1 does not have this bug.

Thanks Darren and Regina for all your help. My vm's are happy as can be this morning. The tut was so simple even I could do it. The rom file works on all my stuff including linux vm's that would not load on other modded roms.

The vmware bios I extracted from Workstation 6.5.2 seems to be structurally quite different from the one you used for this mod (although this is compatible too). Where did you get the original bios from?

The bios is identical for Vmware workstation for 6.5.*

Original bios can be found here:

vmware-vmx.exe (6.5.0.4588) : 814C00-894BFF
vmware-vmx.exe (6.5.1.5078) : 81D400-894BFF
vmware-vmx.exe (6.5.2.7026) : 81FC00-89FBFF
vmware-vmx.exe (6.5.3.8888) : 821400-8A13FF

For modded bios, pick any of the 6.5.* bioses that are already posted.

It only takes two mins to replace the original bios with modded one with a resource editor.

...unfortunately.. it seems that idea of "headers" is not very popular on this forum, so if there's instruction on how to mod *.exe it's hidden somewhere among many posts...

Can someone please help me out,

i have used this guide in the past http://www.box.net/shared/tvqoqyvv62

and have a working slic 2.0 BIOS that activates windows VISTA correctly in ESXi4.0

i'm using the same guide same exact steps to mod the working slp.rom file again with a new SLIC21.bin file that i know it works correctly on a phy. PC for both vista and windows 7. as i'm sure other is also using these slic21.bin files.

however following the above guide exactly step by step. when using SLIC21.bin i can not get vista or win7 to activate in ESXi 4.0

i have tried using the original virgin VM.ROM file, my working slp.rom file.

as well as taking the HP SLIC2.1 rom attached in this thread changing the RSDT then removing the AHCIx.ROM and adding my own SLIC21.bin.

but all the rebuild BIOS has fail to activate vista or win7 in VM.

i have even try just rebuilding the HP-Slic21.rom in this thread with the original slp20.bin file i used and it will correctly activate windows vista.

i really don't have a clue why slic2.1 won't work.

can someone please point me to the right direction what am i missing? as i really want to learn the how-tos of getting SLIC2.1 into VM BIOS.

Thanks,

omekos

my problem is i want to build my own VM BIOS from scrach, which i have done it and was working with slic 2.0 for vista.

but building from scrach for slic 2.1 just won't work, i even try modding the pre-modded (HP SLIC 2.1) bios found here and the link provided using my own extracted slic21.bin file from a working win7 system from a custom japanese brand. but it failed to activate vista or win7 in VM install from the system restore disc for the HW system.

reason i want to do this is because i want to clone this custom build systems into VM, which also have applications in the OS image that seem to be tied to bios locking as well, as when i use the HP bios as is, the applications won't work. but win7 / vista does activate when i replace the original Cert file to HP Certs.

however whenever i build from scratch or replace the slic 2.1 file to the one i extracted from the custom HW system, it just won't activate win7 or vista using matching certs from the restore system disc.

i have make sure that the checksum for the slic21.bin file i extracted from the HW system is correct. so i am now thinking maybe there is another checksum i need to fix when phoenix bios editor is rebuilding the bios file?

but i have search and searched, i just can't seem to find the right direction.

thanks,
