I am running virtualbox 2.2.4 on a Ubuntu derived host with a VM containing a Windows XP Pro Dell OEM. I would like to have XP activated using the DMI string method. I see conflicting results on this forum and others whether this can be done.

1. Do I need to have the DMI strings in the xml file BEFORE installing XP into the VM or can I add them after?

2. What are the strings that I need?

3. Has anyone here actually done this using a Dell OEM XP?

thanks,

1. NO matter, you can add it later
2. NOT Dell, as Dell does NOT store it in DMI area, use Hewlett-Packard (so much easier)
3. Dunno (I do not use VB at all)

I am running the Linux version of VirtualBox. It rocks!

Still waiting for definitive answers on whether or not it is possible to activate the Dell OEM XP in VirtualBox using DMI strings.

I also have a Windows XP HOME CD and license from an old Compaq Laptop (laptop has since died). I could use the Compaq version of XP to install. Does anybody know what the DMI Strings for the Compaq would be?

Dumb question, can I tell use the Hewlett-Packard DMI strings on my Dell XP installation?

One more...if I switch to Vmware Server will I still have the same problem activating my Dell XP installation?

- "can I tell use the Hewlett-Packard DMI strings on my Dell XP installation?"

Sure, you only need to adjust the oembios* files (VLK to OEM changer)

- "Vmware Server will I still have the same problem activating my Dell XP installation?"

Where is the problem? All it takes is few minutes.
Two threads down there is Vmware BIOS ready made

I see you need to read a lot yet, so lets start reading...
