That's what I asked caudex from the very beginning but he never answered. I thought the same thing - if his CDRom is working (or USB) it's very possible to do what you propose - autoexec.bat thingy.

Just change the "2" beside "Action" to a "0" and save the file.

I know that some Phoenix BIOS's config files are largely ignored when you tell them to do nothing, but Insyde does what you want it to do.

Aslo caudex how are you trying to recover? Are you using USB stick?

I've been just burning it onto a CD. I tried putting it onto a FAT USB Stick but no luck too.

Basically this is what i've been doing. Renaming Bios files and putting them straight to root of CD.

ie. D:\VAIO.BIN.

Haven't tried it as a bootable disk though.....

I'm not actually sure if it reads the CD-ROM or USB Stick though.
Ive got a LED on my stick, when i boot with it, it binks few times.
Where as with CD-ROM it would read the CD as if putting a normal cd into a cd rom..... So i wonder if its just a "normal" thing that a CD-ROM would do, or is the computer really reading the CD-ROM.

Oooh I see.... so far I only encounter this one bios which got 2 SLIC... the other Acer bios is using 1 bios... IIRC some member says that 2 SLIC is used for SLIC 2.0 and SLIC 2.1 accordingly..

Put this EFI application (source code: patch to GRUB2-1.96+20090709 [not required to run the EFI application]) on an USB-stick that is formated with FAT32 into the following directory:

\EFI\BOOT\

When the stick is attached to your laptop, it should boot from it regardless of the boot order or whether your allow or deny booting from external devices (actually a security risk of the firmware itself!). Currently I have only reports of Vaio owners that this works. If it doesn't and the boot order/and or booting from external device setting has no effect for you, then I can't help you.
As for usb led light blinking is normal or not... you can try to put a lot of files (with different file name and extension combination)... if the blinking goes longer than we know that the system is searching for files in the stick...

For reference... the method maybe different... but it will be some kind of resemblance to this method : (taken from this thread (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=284686))


(1.) REMOVE CD or DVD if possible (you may have to press the power button the quickly press the CD EJECT button)

(2.) REMOVE ALL USB DEVICES, NETWORK CABLES, (anything hooked to the laptop)

(3.) PRESS AND HOLD the POWER BUTTON DOWN FOR 5 secs to shutdown the laptop

(4.) REMOVE BATTERY

(5.) REMOVE AC CORD

(6.) PUT the USB THUMB DRIVE IN USB SLOT ON RIGHT SIDE OF LAPTOP (the one i used anyway)

(7.) PRESS AND HOLD the POWER BUTTON down for 10 secs... release

(8.) while holding FN + ESC plug in AC POWER CABLE, (KEEP HOLDING FN+ESC the whole time)

(9.) NOW PRESS POWER BUTTON & HOLD IT DOWN... THE FAN SHOULD SPIN UP (keep holding FN+ESC) ONCE FAN SPINS UP, RELEASE POWER BUTTON

(10.) eventually the fan will shut off.... (seemed like 30 seconds,, but could have been 5 minutes... i was freaking out)

when fan shuts off i unplugged my AC CORD... REMOVED THE USB DRIVE,,,, and then plugged the AC power back in,,,

with this command flashit 30F4F2A0.FD /all

the bios finish the write and qutomaqticaly reboot,then i open rw everything :D:D

Hello bgage and thanks for helping here :) Actually your mod is identical to the one I made :D. The bios already contained Slic 2.0 in it but it wouldn't show up for some reason. So you see the same thing is happening with the Slic 2.1 now. I will try to change the *.ini file parameters.

When I look at RW Everything report, there is no SLIC tab in the ACPI table window. In BIOS, there is no Insyde logo on top of BIOS setup screen.

Oooh I see.... so far I only encounter this one bios which got 2 SLIC... the other Acer bios is using 1 bios... IIRC some member says that 2 SLIC is used for SLIC 2.0 and SLIC 2.1 accordingly..

I've been just burning it onto a CD. I tried putting it onto a FAT USB Stick but no luck too.

Basically this is what i've been doing. Renaming Bios files and putting them straight to root of CD.

ie. D:\VAIO.BIN.

Haven't tried it as a bootable disk though.....

I'm not actually sure if it reads the CD-ROM or USB Stick though.
Ive got a LED on my stick, when i boot with it, it binks few times.
Where as with CD-ROM it would read the CD as if putting a normal cd into a cd rom..... So i wonder if its just a "normal" thing that a CD-ROM would do, or is the computer really reading the CD-ROM.

I took the bios from the iso (iso from packard bell site). I dont think my bios has SLIC because the laptop came with original Windows XP Home Edition on it (OEM).

Ok. Here's what i did. I made a bootable iso image that you need to burn to a CD. I used FLASHIT.EXE form your link and your original bios file form your post : http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=99119&postcount=335

I renamed it to R4040M3.FD - similar to what you have done the first time. Also I used the same command: FLASHIT.EXE R4040M3.FD /all
The hole process is automated (I tested it to make sure that all you have to do is just to put the CD in) so lets hope you CDROM will pick up and run :).

Hello bgage and thanks for helping here :) Actually your mod is identical to the one I made :D. The bios already contained Slic 2.0 in it but it wouldn't show up for some reason. So you see the same thing is happening with the Slic 2.1 now. I will try to change the *.ini file parameters.


Yep, I see. Your bios file had already slic 2.0 in it and i changed it to Slic 2.1. Now I think that changing some parameters in the flashing procedure might help. Here, try this please : http://www.sendspace.com/file/0upxhk

Sorry, I wish I could help you but the only mods I'm comfortable doing require a .FD file that I can open in EzH2O. Although one of those files can be opened, EzH2O does not accept either the public key or marker files which I use to substitute SLIC 2.0 for 2.1.

I don't know enough about hexadecimal notation to risk modding it manually. Doing so could potentially permanently destroy your computer.

I took the bios from the iso (iso from packard bell site). I dont think my bios has SLIC because the laptop came with original Windows XP Home Edition on it (OEM).

HP Pavilion dv7 - 1205eg (and every ones wich is using "HP_SP44281")

Done in a Package for everyone...
So real beginners could do this now too!



1] Run File called "1 - Copy Certificate to root of C" as Administrator

2] Followed run "2 - Flash Bios" as Administrator

(After your Notebook is powered off, repower it)

3] Last step - run "3 - Do Certificate and Serial" as Administrator

You still could, and it would flash just as well under Vista as Win7. You'd just have to use a Lo*der to activate Win7.

Well it has survived the flash :) That insyde flash program does not give ANY warning, as soon as you open it, it starts erasing your BIOS and writing the new one without any confirmations, Kinda scary.

I am now installing the cert...will update

First of all, I appreciate your work. The BIOS flashes without any problems. However, this does not activate Win7 or Vista. Of course I used the DELL Certificate and the corresponding Key. States I have x days to activate Windows, so it didn't do the trick.
If I use SLIC Dump Toolkit it states "SLIC 2.1 DELL" now... but somehow i does not work.

Please find attached my rw report AFTER flashing to your modded BIOS.

I guess SONY maybe tricky? I know that they have some "special" BIOS', e.g. I can't access all options in BIOS.

Nope, each SLIC table has its own pubkey and marker sequences that must match each other and the OEM ID. That's why SLIC 2.0's are different from 2.1's. It would be too easy for MS to allow simple editing of the SLIC data ;) haha

I modded all three. I suggest keeping the flashing simple and just use the InsydeFlash tool that corresponds to your architecture (ie. x86 or x64).

Nope. You need to be sure the name of the recovery file needed. The procedure is not difficult and works, it seems that the name of the file is the stinker.

I would not recommend modifying the Sony bios..This has been a sticking point for some time, this is not a recent problem.

If you flash a Sony mod, you will brick your computer.....I would bet on it.:o

First of all, I appreciate your work. The BIOS flashes without any problems. However, this does not activate Win7 or Vista. Of course I used the DELL Certificate and the corresponding Key. States I have x days to activate Windows, so it didn't do the trick.
If I use SLIC Dump Toolkit it states "SLIC 2.1 DELL" now... but somehow i does not work.

Please find attached my rw report AFTER flashing to your modded BIOS.

I guess SONY maybe tricky? I know that they have some "special" BIOS', e.g. I can't access all options in BIOS.

Oooh I see.... so far I only encounter this one bios which got 2 SLIC... the other Acer bios is using 1 bios... IIRC some member says that 2 SLIC is used for SLIC 2.0 and SLIC 2.1 accordingly..

Then boot your computer from the USB stick.... First try :
flashit JAL90X64
After finish restart your computer and enter BIOS then load setup default...
Then load windows... check RW Everything... See if you got SLIC (Software Licensing Description Table) or not...

If not... then repeat booting to your USB stick and type :
flashit JAL90X64 /all
Then check again with RW Everything for SLIC.

I've downloaded the flashit file .copied it along the Jal file to my bootable thumbdrive. rebooted my lappy and got c: prompt

i issued the command flashit jal90x64.fd and finished in a few seconds.
the laptop rebooted itself. i ran rweverything, sigh! still the same!

but i still have one life line. i restarted the laptop and got the c: prompt again
i issued the command flashit jal90x64.fd /all

a few seconds went by and the laptop reboot itself . i removed the flashdrive and got my win7 desktop. The OS requested me to reboot because something has changed. i ran rw everything and slic dump. to my surprise .... my lappy is now slic2.1 compliant using your modded bios file. THANKS alot to you bgage, i owe you one. Thanks to you too str8 for giving us the latitude to articulates our thoughts and opinions.

Well that's odd... usually hp flashing is the easiest than other brand...
You're using Insydeflash?

There's 3 bios file on the modded file... If you're gonna try with flashit make sure you know which one is for your laptop...

If you still wanna try Insyde flash... open platform.ini and change :

Although HP is the safest for flashing modded bios so far, there's no guarantee for 100% successful flashing... There's always a risk if someone flashing the bios... even with the original ones, there's a possibility of bad flashing :p

i modded my compaq presario c734tu laptop with slic 2.1, which falls under F34 bios category.
all you need to do is download the file (i avoided rapidshare because it simply ***king sucks)
the URL is http://filebin.ca/mgzbsd/sp41279.zip or http://filebin.ca/mgzbsd
if you click the first URL its simple, if second url? then rename the file to sp41279.zip and
then unzip the file with your favourite unzipping tool.
as of now i only included the slic 2.1 marker.
