View Full Version : editing gigabyte bios.
I have been trying to edit the bios on my gigabyte GA-8I955x royal board to change the epa logo. (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_DownloadFile.aspx?FileType=BIOS&FileID=12250)
I am using CBROM6.06 to extract the logo and insert a new logo (tux.epa) and have even used modbin6b to load and save the modified bios. It all looks fine, however the PC gets a bios checksum error. Thankfuly the motherboard is dual bios so recovering is easy.
Can anyone offer any hints on where I may be going wrong?
many thanks

A bios checksum error is normal when you have flashed your BIOS all you need to is reset it with the appropriate jumper and when you boot up enter the Setup and choose your settings.
I have being servicing computers for years but have never had the ba**s to edit the BIOS file Well done

Just use CBROM:
cbrom your.bios /EPA release
cbrom your.bios /EPA tux.epa
That's all
Hi,
This is driving me nuts. All I am trying to do is change the epa logo and have had zero luck so far.
As a last resort test, I have extracted the epa file from the bios, and the re-inserted the same file back without any other changes and the bios becomes corrupt.
Steps I have done are:
C:\bios\test>CBROM606.EXE 8i955xro.f11 /epa extract
CBROM V6.06 (C)Award Software 1999 All Rights Reserved.
Enter an extract file Name : (dps2.bmp)
[EPA] ROM is extracted to dps2.bmp
C:\bios\test>CBROM606.EXE 8i955xro.f11 /epa release
CBROM V6.06 (C)Award Software 1999 All Rights Reserved.
[EPA] ROM is release
C:\bios\test>CBROM606.EXE 8i955xro.f11 /epa DPS2.BMP
CBROM V6.06 (C)Award Software 1999 All Rights Reserved.
Adding DPS2.BMP . 19.0%
C:\bios\test>
The bios is now corrupted. When I flash it there is a checksum error and the pc boots off the secondary bios only (dual bios motherboard).
Can anyone take some time to tell me what I am doing wrong please? If I don't get this step right, I will certainly never be able to test any real bios mods I do.
many thanks in advance.
Hmmm,
You may try again with newer version of cbrom. Is the logo at the same location after? I mean memory location in bios. Post a /d before and after inserting. Maybe your bios is sensible about that issue. Should not be, and your steps you´ve done seem to be right.
Yen
Hi Yen,
I think you may be right on the location issue.

Originaly the EPA is at position 15.
then it moves to position 21.
Any Ideas??
thanks
The size of the modules before and after are exactly the same. Honestly, I don´t know if the posistion does matter here. I would say no.......
You can try again with a newer version of cbrom. Maybe yours from 1999 is too old.
Sorry, I have got no other ideas.....never heared of that problem before.

Hi
I'm with Yen, you should try with a CBROM v1.55 (have worked with many Gigabytes and the new ones only have success mods with it), you can also move the EPA to is original position, and test it.
