This thread is a "starting point", a "Top-down" comparison of:
-Virtual Machines"... across "ALL" OSes...
...hence, I beleive it should be made sticky... ;)

After reading around about virtualization I decided to start trying with an independent, large and wellknown provider: VMware (There are other alternatives)
To choose an independent provider was essential to me, because I intended to virtualize
-from a Linux-partition with Linux as "Host-OS" as well as
-from a Windows-partition with Windows as "Host-OS" :)
I did not want M$ restrictions to limit my choises, starting to learn about virtualization...
VMware products cover both above platforms.
For beginners, as well as for advanced users, VMware offer two productlines:
-VMware Workstation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware_Workstation) (proprietary)
-VMware Server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware_Server) (Free)
...
VirtualBox also qualifies (linux and windows host) and is free. Vmware's a little better though.
