How To get a free Server 2008 and/or Server 2008 R2 Product Key. Yes it will state Standard, but I tested the key on Enterprise and it activated no problem.
The key from this site activates Windows Server 2008 & R2 Standard and Enterprise

1. Change your proxy server to a proxy from China (Optional) **do this in Internet Explorer, it works better, and doesn't time out!** Try other browsers too! Other members have tried not using a proxy so give it a shot, tell us your results!
2. Visit this link: https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com/Products/win_2008_server_stan.aspx
3. Log into the page using your OWN Windows Live ID **Make fake accounts if you want more Keys**
4. Once logged in, click Verify and choose China from the drop down list on the right. ** A map will show up asking you to select your country, if you followed everything else select China***
5. Next choose China-CERNET from the list **This is will bring up the server log in page for you, it takes a moment** When the dialogue pops up enter one of the screen names below, any of them it doesn't matter, I suggest copying and pasting into the username login pop up Ease2002 demonstrated a good username and password, Thank you**

If you see the certificate error still continue on, don't cancel navigation, it's something with dreamspark (go figure).

6. Once that is complete, it will take you to a verification screen, which takes about 30-40 seconds, once complete, it will say "congratulations you are now verified, click here to view all products. Click on Windows Server 2008 Standard or R2(Remember the key works for both Standard and Enterprise), you can not download from this site, but click the check box agreeing to the terms and under the download links is a button for GET KEY***

7. You now have access to your product key click Get key

*** While you are there, grab all the other product keys as well!!!****

If all else fails, try different proxies (TRY Without too, I have had more success without it), that seems to be everyone's hard time is the proxies are bogged down a lot. or they are suppppper slow! If it's still not working, please let us know, either I or someone on the board can help you, thanks for being part of our community!

what they planned to offer is:

"Windows Server 2008 x86 standard" apparently available on October 1, 2008. I saw no reference to Enterprise.

Working China Proxy until now: 218.14.227.198 port 3128.
Tip: If this proxy is not working anymore, you need to get a CN Proxy that accepts secure connections (HTTPS), only a few could do this.
You may get as many key as you want, just need to use another Passport Login to get each key.

I used Server 2008 PID-Key Checker to check the key that I got from the website. The serial number type is Volume MAK, but the Edition type unspecified. so, can any check if the key from the website work on Enterprise and datacenter edition?

Tested and work with Enterprise, not tested with Datacenter but I think it will work fine.
Get Windows Server 2008 x64 (Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter) directly from MS and use the key.

To my knowledge, there are 3 types of Server 2008 volume keys:
Volume_MAK_A = Computer Cluster or Web Edition
Volume_MAK_B = Standard or Enterprise
Volume_MAK_C = Datacenter or IA64 Itanium

Therefore, if a MAK key activated an Enterprise edition, it can assumed that the MAK key is the "B" channel type. "B" keys can only be used to activate Standard or Enterprise edition. To activate Datacenter or IA64 Itanium edition, you would need a "C" channel MAK key.

I got today a key from China (after trying 3 days).
But I think this is not a MAK key.
I tested it with VAMT 1.1 and it has only one possible activation allowed. But the key is valid for standard and enterprise servers.

So I should get some other keys (for server 2008 enterprise) before the server in china is blocked.

You must have overlooked the fact that VAMT actually states the keys from this excellent method as being MAK.
Yes the count for aktivation for each key is just 1.
Even so I do trust the VAMT resolving the keys as MAK

Yep, seen exactly the same.

MAK keys can have various counts but these has only one.
Judging from the site that issues them it is for educational purposes.
I guess thats why the 1 single activation per key.
Still I do believe the VAMT report of the key type is accurate.

Of course this is all speculation.
Havent felt like calling MS to clear up things though.

Yes just let them know you got the key off of the site and you shouldn't have any problems.

Worked for me, using a chinese proxy.
Yes, you get a MAK_B with 1 activation, checked it with VAMT. I guess it's the same as with MSDNAA where I got a 1-time MAK as well.
It only lets you activate online once. My MSDNAA W2k8 installation recently got deactivated when I did a BIOS upgrade, so I had to do the reactivation by phone. The automated phone system worked just fine though, I didn't have to explain why I needed to activate.

I just activated my enterprise without HyperV

Go to internet options => Connections => LAN Settings => Check the box for "Use a proxy server for you LAN" and enter in the below proxy and port:

Proxy 218.14.227.198 Port 3128 worked like a charm...

The hard part that is not explained in my opinion is the username and password.

I used
username: star13@live.haust.edu.cn
Password: cab97b99-a8d6-401f-83f6-d13b7c0db0cd

Once you get redirect to the windows page it will as for downloaded software...press the button and then check that you accept the agreement and then scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click the Get Key button...you will have you MAK key...

Worked like a charm.

Make sure you are using Internet Explorer, I just tested the site and it worked perfectly. If you don't use IE it will time out. Just a heads up :) I tried Firefox and Opera and both fail on logging in to verify.

Remember you need a new Windows ID everytime you want a new key

You can get your own live ID by create a live or hotmail account, then follow the given intructions to get your own keys

Go to www.Passport.net and sign up using a hotmail account, or use your own email addy. It's basically a way so Microsoft can spam you to death.

edit: I got the msg as I logged in without going the proxy (oops), but I'd still like access to the iso, I couldn't get it to download even through the proxy.

Does anyone have a direct link to the visual studio iso from dreamspark, as the trial version doesn't take it, also has a different sha1, as I can no longer download from the dreamspark site, it now gives a msg about being from china and not being allowed to download, I was able to download before though.

I was able to get a key ! yay!

I used Firefox.
You just need to find the right proxy. ;)
I also worked some magic as the msdn server wouldnt redirect to the chinese site using the proxy.

great post but i have a probleme. I can't download the DVD because he said he has detected i'm not in China and when i click on "GET KEY", nothing happens :S

there is a checkbox that says "I have read and agree to the terms of the license agreement", you have to check that first. you can download the server 2008 iso from microsoft directly.

Hi all

Played around a bit with vmware today and some modded slic vm bios....
Worked very well o´course for activating other stuff...

But this did also cause another vm previously aktivated using one of this threads MAK keys to ask for reactivation....

Disconnected the vm NIC causing it to fail online activation offering the alternate options....

Went for the automated telephone system option....

Typed the OS installation ID to the phone system...
System verified it and gave me the key to reactivate.....

No questions asked all handled by their machinery.

I couldnt download the ISO before, but it looks like you can now.
The ISO you get is :

Looks like now they give those keys out in alphabetical order... in October it was just the growing PID; according to how fast it was growing, they were giving out about 800-1000 keys per day. This order ended up at -700-390000... or maybe -700-400000... now the order is defined by the keys themselves, it's 2B.... at this moment...

Finally figured out how to get the proxy working today and managed to get a couple of keys and they are now up to:

2KXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

That seems to leave alot of headroom for further numbering. :)

I wouldn't worry about them running out, just getting there before they close the door to this particular process.

i was carefully reading all MDL forums and never asked for help until this time. After messing around with a dosen of different CN proxies for a few hours I'm finally stuck at "redirecting to requested site" page and it won't let me go thru (infinite loading). Could someone PM me a Std key please? my trial period is ending tomorrow (including all 3 rearms). Thanks in advance!

if you manually cycle thru the products you can get sql2005,vspro2005,win2k3 just change the productid 1 to 20 :)

Just tested still working everyone, those of you that are PMing me for keys, I will if you have more then 1 or 2 posts on here. Dreamspark will never get shut down since it's for educational purposes.

If you are in school and your school isn't listed go to Journeyed and get one for your School, it took me a day to get a legit account on dreamspark.

That's because they are single use keys, now you have to phone in or make another Windows LIVE ID account and get another.

Hate to say it but you wasted that on your Virtual Machine...

That's true but per microsoft they only log the windows live ID not the verification process.

Follow the same way listed in the first post. Make sure you are not logged in with your old ID, log back in, verify with one of the user name and passwords, then you will get another key, if you use the same window live id you will always get the same key

i tried to get some keys everyday.since last two weeks i was trying and it will end up without anything. i am from India. i tried all the proxies and not even a single one is working. i dont know why.

Guess I have to put this out there once more, I am glad to see this post is still working for some of you out there. Those of you out there that are sending me PMs asking for more then one key, let's not be so greedy. If I have free time I will grab some more.

For those that can't get it to work, try at different times of the day, I have noticed on the other boards that I have this posted that when it's early in the morning in China everyone is having more problems. I received Timeouts in Firefox, but not IE, where for some it's different.

For all that have added tips to the post Thank you it's nice to see the community pulling together so we can all enjoy the true Vista.

Just remember when you get the key, it's for Single use, it's not meant for several computers. So use it wisely.

Was able to get to the authentication server so I used the following:

username: star13@live.haust.edu.cn
Password: cab97b99-a8d6-401f-83f6-d13b7c0db0cd

But then those details failed... :(
Haven't been able to get back to it since...
I wonder if it's blocked my Live ID?

If anyone has a spare key they'd be willing to part with I'd be pretty grateful! :)

Of all the names you pick for a user name you pick Bill Gates? Now that's ironic. :p

As always, what step are you getting stuck at? Have you tried different proxies?
Different Browsers?

Yes the keys from Dreamspark will activate Standard or Enterprise, they will not activate Datacenter.

I am usually back on here around 9:30CST, let's hear what happened when you try.

Have just succeded, took me long, and I had to press for my key ~ 5 times before the key showed. Persistence combined with patience sure does everything provided you're in the right direction.

i used the software hide your ip address(just search it in google) and i changed the proxy.

no offence (given/taken) from the last post, and w/o me being a procastinating rant. realising that not too many here may("/not") be equipped to handle issues w.r.t. windows keys and activation and wga tests? i came across this FAB article by donna. well, it does work. i did try it. and the best thing is? if you are lucky i.e. not calling MS during business hours you may get the extra 70 $ tip off. the URL is

hope this helps others. well, if you are so clever getting the keys why not again make it genuine and revalidate, using this. i dont take any warranty and/or assurance for/against this method, i just tried and it worked (with me atleast) as i called in odd hours, when the auto attendant attends the call. hope this helps others, who are still wondering as in how to re-activate and also how to re-genuine it.
if i am able to procastinate in the earlier post about warez and people running away from technical reading this this may be fill the gap.
hope this helps, many more free windows 2008 users, who wishes to make it genuine or reactivate after a major hardware change w/o using token and PKI bios hash. good luck to all.

221.0.4.253:80
221.0.4.231:80
both 80 port, transparent and provides ssl anonymity. hope this helps.
and latency is low almost as low as 5 ms. :-)

You get one key per Live ID.

You can create as many Live ID's as you can create email accounts for.

chianf092, I see you get a lot of key's for users who can't get a key by themselves. How do you get that high number of key's? Are you creating every time a free live/ms ID?

Bingo :) You don't always need a valid email either, MS just closes them after a certain amount of days.

I created all mine on Yahoo and never even activated them. Once you have an email address to enter into the Live ID you get your Live ID and then its merely following the directions in the first post.

The main thing seems to be that you make sure you log into the server where you get the Key from a SSL- anomyous proxy from China and then, when prompted, use one of the listed keys.

MS's servers don't seem to care where the email or Live ID was generated. By that I mean it doesn't care if you created the Live ID with a US based IP, as long as you log into the site that generates the key with the proxy server from China.

Sorry I am only grabbing keys for those that have earned it on here, what do you have to share with MDL?

Hate being that way but those I have assisted before took the keys and ran and didn't assist anyone else, etc.

The sequence mentioned at the beginning in this thread is STILL WORKING.
People saying they cannot get one should have something WRONG with no doubt with their configurations or settings or in their procedures NOT with their PC or wiring or local environments.

if they can't even get a key , what the hell are they doing with a server O.S. to begin with ?

They're a great set of spoon feed instructions people, If English isn't your first language, Google does a nice job translating it, or ask for help in your native tongue!

but the begging has to stop. before the people that give gets mad and leaves...

sometimes the ldap server times out, but keep trying with one of the proxies listed here and eventually it will work. I tried 2-3 weeks ago and it was not working, then tried the other day and it was good to go.

I have tried every single chinese proxy i have found on the internet for the past 2 hours. Most dont work, and the few that do automatically redirect me to dreamspark.com. Even then clicking on server 2008 it will just time out :(

When that doesn't happen, it just keeps telling me invalid security certificate, and that it's only valid for dreamspark.com :( :( :(

If you are having problems, let the chinese ftp timeout and then activate proxy.
If you are using Firefox, just click on the "Try again" button.
You can disable the proxy now and continue browsing to get your key.

Thank you everyone that has helped others in getting a key. So far I have given out 30+ keys and I am grateful for the others that have helped those that have difficulties.

Some things noted on this trick: Don't give up on the proxy, I have noticed on certain times of the day the proxy times out, sometimes the university in China does. Persistence pays off.

I have also seen the "invalid security certificate" tell the browser to continue anyway and it will work, if you click "block" then you have start all over again.

You get one key per live ID, so make more Live ID accounts and you will get more keys.

I will be gathering some more keys later today, if you need one, send me a PM

The university's authentication server (idp.msuniversity.edu.cn) seems to be down for me. (Using all the proxies I could find and my non-proxied connection) :(

I'll definitely keep trying though, every couple hour or so when I'm at my computer. Hopefully it'll pay off. :)

Can someone please provide me with a key in case it doesn't? :(

I was about to say that it wouldn't work, but after trying in IE7 and Opera, I decided to try in Firefox.

Worked first time, using the same proxy and .NET account. :D

(I think it's because I only proxied HTTP traffic in Opera and IE7, but FoxyProxy automatically does both.)

I cant seem to get in without a time out could someone point me to a low latency proxy. I actually want a key for 2003 server vs 2008 which is also offered there.

I've found that I need to keep a list of 3-5 proxies available all the time.

This way, when a few go down (as seems to happen frequently) there's usually always one available. :)

For those getting time outs on just the verification page (after choosing your country and progressing), make sure you're proxying HTTPS too. If you're not, all will seem to be going fine except the verification server will keep timing out.

happened to me as well, go back to www.dreamspark.com then try again, it will work the second time. Also everyone please try different times of the day! I just pulled 10 keys off there in under 15 minutes, since everyone is asleep in CHINA!!! Remember if you do it once, don't close your IE or other browser, click on sign out, with another NON Proxied browser, make more passports, then go back and sign back in this time you will not have to copy and paste the user name over. It will just verify your new Windows Live ID as valid, and wallah! Another Server Key!

I have noticed most are trying late at night, do a google search for what time it is in China first, most likely if it's during their daytime, it will time out. Today was the fastest, and I checked it was 3AM in China! So Google first then try it! It's always slow for me when it's between 5am-11pm China time!

Hope this helps some of you out there that it keeps timing out on.

So Google first then try it! It's always slow for me when it's between 5am-11pm China time!

I've been getting mine between 4PM and 2AM NZDT (11AM - 9PM CST - China time) and haven't noticed many slow speeds or timeouts. The ones that do occur are to do with one or two of the proxies I'm using timing out.

I have trouble installing server 2008. When it asks me to enter key, i enter nothing and choose to try it. But the installation process stuck just stuck there, so i can't continue on installation.

Could anyone shoot me a spare 2008 key so that i can continue installation? Thanks

I've been following this thread for a while as a lurker and decided to share my experience. I've had no luck. I did succeed in getting to the last step and just can't connect to the Uni server. I'm a persistent person so I'm now on a mission to complete this process. Over a month trying, always getting stopped by either proxies going down mid stream or other such problems.

The last 2 tries got me the closest. Someone in this thread suggested trying when China is sleeping. I'll try that next. I'll post back with the results.

BTW, thanks to the OP for sharing this.

ive kept on trying and trying to no avail, so now im trying the JourneyEd method (cuz im in high school) so hopefully, they will approve me and i can get the serials

btw, thnks for the person who got me the two serials, ur de bomb, i just want some more :p

LOL try different proxies, that seems to be everyone's issue on here. Plus make sure the proxy can handle https:

Journey Ed is good, MS has a program for HS students but I think you lose most of the software on there.

Dreamspark will always work, it's the user name and passwords that I am worried about.

That does sound the best:

I have used several proxies, but the fastest for me has been

60.10.59.76:3128

This proxy does slow down from time to time, and will give certificate errors, just continue on you will be fine

When i use internet explorer:
1)i go here https://www.dreamspark.com/default.aspx using proxy-no problem
2)then choose windows server standard from the list
3)i click on sign in and sign in with my live id account
4)then it redirect me back and i click on verify
5)i choosed country as china,clicked on CHINA-cernet and get error
Proxy used:60.10.59.76 port 3128

It s unbelievable,it s working now.THanks guys.Maybe the CHINA-cernet was down yesterday or at time that i was trying to get that.If i will encounter any other errors in the future ill let you know.

While I was there I grabbed a key to VS 2008. My eval is running out. The key I got won't upgrade the eval. The key is for VS 2008 Pro and I have that installed.

For anyone that might have been having the same problem as me.

Uninstall Visual Studio and then install using the key you got. Once I did that the eval was turned into full version.

grrr..... epic phail....

its not working.. been trying for about a week now, every chinese proxy i could find, different browsers and everything, always get a timeout with the universitys login. could someone get me a couple server serials please?

Keys from this method is valid for both standard and enterprise editions....

No locked/blocked features!
