VMware W'Stn v6-7 & Player v3 [Windows] (Multi-Brand/Version) Bios Installer
UPDATED ... 23/11/2009 (added VM Player v3 patching)
Works on VMware W'Stn (v6-7) & Player (v3)[Windows]
This tool will auto-detect location of vmware-vmx.exe and directly patch BINRES 6006 bios file with whatever brand you select from the menu.
It works fine with older and newer versions of VMware Workstation as it disregards CRC checking of the file it's patching (x32 or 64bit).
How To Use:-
1. Make sure VMware W'Stn (v6-7) or VM Player (v3) is turned off (can't patch a file if it's in use).
2. Double-click the Installer and make your selection .... it will confirm done, seconds later.
3. VMware should now run with the bios file you selected.
Note:- on first use a "back-up" copy of your vmware-vmx.exe is made and confirmation of it's location displayed ... if for any reason you wish to return to an untouched state, you have the ability to just manually overwrite vmware-vmx.exe in your Program Files with your untouched back-up copy.

Error:- if vmware-vmx.exe not found in any of the 5xlocations
http://i49.tinypic.com/oix01f.jpg
How it works
It works by finding vmware-vmx.exe (if present in one of the 5x locations), where Restorator silently patches binres 6006 entry with the selected resource file, and confirms the job is done. It will patch any version whether x32 or x64 bit by disregarding CRC checking. It's portable, nothing is actually installed to your system.

!!! ATTENTION PLEASE !!!
VMware v7 Problems ...
As highspeedmac, cwag17, Pico, amires, Crozzy UK, have advised running v7 in x32/64bit without issue, logic tells me that patching binres 6006 in v7 would appear to be successful and cause no ill effects.
so what can the problem for others be then? ....
Wrong System?
1a).Do not expect to have VMware Workstation v7 for Linux installed, and think this patcher will work .. it wont.
1b).English/USA only ... not suitable for other languages (file paths and binres 6006 language ID en/usa).
Restrictions/Compatibility?
2.Is DEP control; UAC; antivirus; Firewall blocking any vm services from starting ... did you install v7 in compatibilty mode?
Bad Uninstall?
3.Previous partially uninstalled earlier version of vmware may leave files, drivers and registry keys behind that get mixed in the wash the the new install of v7. ...I would suggest that after uninstall, reboot, then manually look for any files folders in Programs Directory, including Common Files, User Folders, including All Users folders, and appdata folders .. you would need to go into Folder View to show all hidden files to see some of these folders .... I would delete anything that said vmware. ... run something like CCleaner to mop-up and delete old file paths....and reboot again.
Bad/Incompatible configuration of Virtual machine?
4.You may have kept an earlier machine (made in an earlier version), and that's fine, just be aware that vm v7 has more bells and whistles, with more config file entries than earlier versions, and may not run your ealier built machine properly ... and most likely tells you it recognises earlier build machine, and asks if it can convert it to its format, which would make it unuseable in earlier machine if attempted later. ... your earlier machine may also have earlier version tools installed, that v7 does not like.
Made brand new machine using v7 to make it?
5.still get errors... doesn't load, or slow to load, or errors ... still something wrong from 1,2,3, or 4 then go to 6.
Go Back to earlier VM version!
6.Take a deep breath ... v7 doesn't like your PC (compatibility issues), go back to v6.5
Conclusion
The vmware-vmx.exe patch process is identical for all users, and would either patch or not patch.
If v7.0.0 build-203739 patches and runs successfully for one user, then it makes no sense to cause fault for another. ..at this point I see nothing I can fix, as logic dictates "problems for some" are config/compatiblity related.

and/or any other file location for 64bit.

@highspeedmac ....
thanks for the confirmation, I'll add that file location to the installer and re-up asap ...I'll edit 1st post when it's done.
I made it check 3 x locations for 32 bit cause older versions vm file located inside "bin" folder ... but newer versions of vm seem to locate that exe in the main folder ...(no bin folder) ..... and VM Lite edition from wincert.net installs in different folder.
Hopefully, when I add the 64 bit location, all the common locations will be covered. :)

@highspeedmac & cwag17..
Difficult for me to check 64bit (running 32bit) ... but couple questions.
1. VMWare "turned off" before patching?
2. When you select and enter ... do you get message saying "bla,bla....turned on"?
3. If you select 00 (Default) .... returning to default ... do you get success and error gone?
@pantagruel..
yeah select 1-50 is SLP1 for xp testing and select A1-A10 is Slic 2.1 for Win7 testing

Difficult for me to check 64bit (running 32bit),
Yea, I can understand that. :) I'll poke around my system and see If I can't figure out why it's not giving ownership back in 64bit..
1. VMWare "turned off" before patching? -----> Yes
2. When you select and enter ... do you get message saying "bla,bla....turned on"? ----> Yes
3. If you select 00 (Default) .... returning to default ... do you get success and error gone? ----->
Lets just say if I didn't make a backup exe there might have been a lot of Mad faces in my post... So no the error does not go away. Once run, It removes the users Ownership to the exe and does not give it back even after it's set back to default. I mean it's just a matter of retaking ownership, but I know you didn't want a user to have to do that as part of using this patch.

Below I attached a Log of all the file activity your patch creates and does on a Windows Xp Sp2 x64 system.
Maybe it can be of some help to you..
Be warned lol it's long, but I happen to noticed that at some points there are file not found errors.
Edit: if you use Sysinternals File Monitor, you can open the below Log file in it, so you can get a much neater organized view of it..

The 64bit and 32bit 6.5.3.185404 versions of vmware-vmx.exe are obviously different.
However, I extracted the BIOS from both of them and the file hashes show that the BIOS files are identical.
ResHacker doesnt seem to be able to modify the 64bit vmware-vmx.exe. You can verify this by opening ResHacker and trying to open the file. Nothing will happen.
So... I used your program to modify the 32bit vmware-vmx.exe and then extracted the modified BIOS with an HP SLP 1.0 and an HP SLIC 2.1 in it. I then used Anolis2009 (http://www.codeplex.com/anolis), another resource editor, to modify the 64bit vmware-vmx.exe and place the modified BIOS in it.
I only partially tested it in Windows 7 64bit with VMware 6.5.3 installed. It booted up off a floppy and i ran oembios.exe. It returned with the information that shows my "computer" is recognized as being OEM.
Hopefully this helps someone. I need some sleep now...

I was just about to post a similar statement for searchengine... After running the patch I manually changed the ownership back, The result was the exe had not been patched, the VM had no slic . Even though your patch says it did it, it didn't...
In the log I uploaded I believe you can see the error when ResHacker is called.. It also looks as if, your patcher is looking for files that are not being move or copied to the locations the patcher expects them to be in..
So, it looks as if I want you use this, I'll have to use this on 32 bit systems for now.. You've got a little work ahead of you, to get this working with 64 bit
Windows & VMware...
Still a cool tool and Idea...

Firstly, many thanks guys for detailing 64bit problems encountered.
For now tho, I will edit 1st post to say 32bit only (at least for now).
Personally, I have been running this in 32bit, and never had a single failure
(I have ran all 10 win7 patches "A1-A10" ...and some of the 50 SLP1 for xp, but not all).
However, 64bit is obviously another story ... I will carefully read thru all the comments and the log posted to see if I can see a worthwhile solution ... and I will also take a closer look at takeownership problems.
Thanks guys.

cheers, just been thinking about Restorator (that's what I made the .res files with ... then used ResHacker in the installer to apply the .res files by silent commandline).
Thinking, I can make self-contained Restorator "Patcher" files (.exe) that can be ran with silent switches, therefore its a full Restorator patch process that hopefully works in the 64bit o/s, and as its a standalone unit would not need to worry about the "not free" problem.
I will make a test of a few files, and post, asking for a few kind 64bit users to try and report ....highspeedmac has already kindly offered to test for 64bit.
Pico...
:D ... at last, another "satisfied" 32bit customer; that makes two of us. ;)

Here is a small "x64Bit Test Installer", that uses Restorator Patcher exe's that contain modded binres 6006 resource (instead of ResHacker) with a silent commandline switch to patch vmware-vmx.exe in 64bit o/s.
As I run 32bit o/s, I can't fully test ... created folder paths in my o/s to mimic paths in 64bit o/s ... and managed to get the files to patch... but can't be sure how it will act in the 64bit o/s.
If anyone wants to test, then here's the link.
Edit - removed tester download link (1st post upated with new installer)
(for testing it only includes SLIC 2.1 patching for HP and Toshiba).
with any luck, this may solve earlier 64bit patching problems.

could you extract the installer with winrar or whatever you use....and in the Resources folder ...you will find HP_A_RUN.exe and TOSHIBA_A_RUN.exe.
If you take any one of those exe files and sit it right next to your vmware-vmx.exe and double-click the HP_A_RUN or the TOSHIBA_A_RUN exe; does that allow file to patch without error?
looking very much like trying to do this in 64bit is a no go tho. :(

No go, I get the same error...
I'm wondering if it might be the version of VMware I'm running.. Currently I have 6.5.2 - 156735 with a Moded 64 bit Vmware-vmx.exe ( 6.5.2 -7026 )
I have the original 64 bit vmx.exe, which is the one I have been testing your Patch on.. But if you are patching a 32bit version and I have a 64 bit version, I would likely think My file would be different and your patch would not work.. So it may help you to look at the 64 bit "VMware-vmx.exe"
Later this evening I will upload my Moded 64 bit vmx.exe & the original 64 bit vmx.exe. Hopefully that will allow you to to see what you may need to do differently with the patch...
The Shot below shows the VMware-vmx.exe on my system runs in full 64 bit mode..

that last thing you tried is Restorater standalone patcher exe that contains the binres 6006 resource .... and as Restorator is supposed to support 64bit, I hoped it would do the job that Reshacker failed to do.

I will work on an all-in-one x32 & 64 bit installer now (using Restorator Standalone Patcher exe's instead of using Reshacker to apply the patches). The main problem was that Restorator does a CRC check of the files its patching by default, hence the "not suitable error" on 64bit ... but I have since discovered ResPatchers can be told to force patch (using silent switches) ignoring CRC check of files.

My Virtual PC folders are here...
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Virtual PC\
"Virtual PC.exe" is the process called on my system.. LOL, the process is running
in 32 bit mode.. If I remember correctly, That's why I don't use Virtual PC.. They label it 64 bit but it runs as 32 bit. Only the drivers are 64 bit i believe..
There is no "vcp.exe" file on my system...
This run of your Patcher failed cause it can't find the "Virtual PC.exe".
@ highspeedmac, vpc.exe is the new windows 7 virtual pc. if installed it is in c:\windows\system32 well from what i remember don't i have 2007 sp1 version on at the moment.

Ah, yep, that would explain it..
My test was done on the older MS Virtual PC 2007 x64 for XP/Vista... I have Windows 7, but For now I'm running it in VMware.. LOL, as far as I know, I don't think you can run a VM inside another VM.. So any results I have would be for the Older Version OF VPC..
Hum, now you've got me wondering, Can you run the new MS VPC inside of a VMware Windows 7 VM?
Hum, now you've got me wondering, Can you run the new MS VPC inside of a VMware Windows 7 VM? that would be interesting to know only reason i don't like vmware is the sheer size will need to check if lite version is available for latest version.

OK, I have managed to make a lite version. Now I just need to test it thoroughly before I post.
The lite version i managed to get it down to "160MB" (Also has x64 support as well)
EDIT:
I think I can strip this down to "140MB"
EDIT: 2
Am going to need more time on this one, theres something wrong, i know what the problem is, just need more time editing and fine tuning the MSI file

highspeedmac & urie ....
A while back, I tried to install vmware, inside another vmware ... didn't work, it spotted it, and produced pop-up sayin something like " you can't install virtual machine inside another virtual machine" ..... havn't tried for a while tho, maybe different now.
MS Virtual PC - Test 2 [added check for :- Program Files (x86)] :p
Download link:- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZIH539ES
At first I installed 2007 x32bit ... tried some patching ... and worked; then I thought, what about SP1? ... so installed that and Virtual PC.exe changed to SP1 version ... tried same patcher on that .... and worked as well.
wasn't sure about x64, but like urie said, thought that vpc.exe would be in system32 .... that's why I didn't bother with "Program Files (x86)" in 1st Test Patcher ..... but added that file location in this one.
VMWare Lite .... yeah, up until few days ago I was using very old version v6.0.2 bld 59824 (always found it faster and more stable than newer versions)... but installed full version 6.5.3-185404 few days ago, and seems OK ... I did try v7 final last night, but removed it after 5 minutes .. didn't run well on my PC.

Yea, Vmware is a heavy app. 7 is even more so.. I'm glad to see there is a lite one of 7 in the works.. It's one of the main reason why i'm still using Xp x64. Since Xp has less over head it let's me run multiple VM's at the same time, plus still be able to actually use the host.. I will be watching ricktendo64's work on a lite Vmware 7 like a hawk.. :D
I've try Virtual Box, but I found Virtual Box would just keep eating ram.. LOL, once while it was running I watched it eat 7 gig of ram for 1 VM with only 2 gig of ram allotted to it..
I have yet to use the new MS VPC, but I think I will try it out later today.. That is if it lets me install it in a VMware VM of Windows 7..
Edit: The one great thing about the new Vmware 7 is that it can use the Aero themes and it runs a little better with A Windows 7 VM. But being honest, 6.5.2 or 6.5.3 run Win 7 fairly well, and if you don't care about your VM themes, I can't really find a good reason to update yet..

No, from what I understand, you will just end up with Slic 2.1, this patches VMware with one version/Brand of slic at a time. So you can Have either a 1.0 Slic or a 2.1 Slic.
But for example, Hp slic 2.1 contains 2.0 & 1.0. ;)

There are 10 Slic 2.1 brands you can patch at this time, so if you select one of those 10 to activate Win7 and are happy to have XP run with the same brand you selected for Win7 .... then you do not need to patch again for SLP1 (it's included).
If you want XP and Win7 to run with different brands, then you would need to select individually.
There are 60 options for XP; but only 10 options for Win7 at this time, until more slic 2.1 bios files are leaked.

I run a 32bit o/s so I can't even try to reproduce your error.
I tried all slic 2.1 files in vmware v7 before removing it, wasn't good on my PC ...but all was fine in 32bit.
A few earlier posts say fine with vmware v7 ..but think they were 32bit.
But highspeedmac runs 64bit and had no issue with HP slic2.1 in vmware v7RC ... and I am not 100% sure, but think he is running v7 final now, without any slic2.1 issues.
That error looks more like a disk partition error problem .... if your vmware machine is setup as SCSI ... changing it to IDE may solve it.

Maybe it's just me, but as someone mentioned, you may have different applications that requires the "original" bios. Wouldn't it work better if you can have a list of bios as per your application but "PATCH" the VMX file since the VMX file can specify a alternate bios ? I would think that would be safer, able to work with different versions, and more flexible...

To patch the vmx config file\s located in User\Documents\Virtual Machine\ .... then subfolder or multiple subfolders "specifically named by user when machine\s created" each containing a vmx config file and requiring edit and rom file copied to each location across all platforms XP; Vista; and Win7 x32 and 64bit ..... that's laiden with minefields.
The patch would be required to guess folder names created by user ... and in the case of Vista and Win7 takeownership and admin rights to gain access to edit in or copy to "USER" folders.
Early tests, taking ownership and using admin rights on one file (vmware-vme.exe), caused vmware to have a fit and not allow use of machine.
Patching the brain "vmware-vmx.exe" ... although not easy, is by far the easiest, and safest way to apply bios mod.
As far as versions are concerned, I do not know of a version, (from v6.0.2 thru to v7) so far, that has not been successfully patched in both 32 and 64bit across all platforms. I am also unaware of any blue screens of death.
Selecting 00 returns vmware to default bios.

Just so you know, I have been using your patcher quite a lot over the last couple of days.
I have used it mainly for the last day or 2 in Vmware 7, I can report that on my PC it has caused no errors. It never fails to Patch and un-patch, and so far has caused no file corruption.
Also I have a friend who has been using it with the older Version 6.5.2, he has the same result as me. No errors.. He is using it under 32 bit Vista..
For anyone worrying about file corruption, the simple solution is to create a Backup copy of the "VMware-vmx.exe", Store it in another folder for safe keeping.. That way if by any chance corruption does occur, you'll have a backup of your original..
For me so far, your patcher has been a solid tool. I'm happy with the fact, that you made it a very simple process and that your patcher does not do a whole bunch of stuff, just to work....

yep ... I am running Win7 Ultimate 32 bit o/s and have had no issues using the patcher (on various vm versions) ..... the early issues were x64bit bit related, admin rights, file paths and 64bit vmware-vmx.exe patching problems due to CRC check failures ... but with your testing and feedback, we overcame those early issues.
Like you say, folks can copy their original before running the patcher, for peace of mind.
I have plans for the installer to auto-backup original vmware-vmx.exe on 1st occassion it is run, but waiting till I get some more slic 2.1's to add to menu, and will then update the main link. :)

I have exactly the same issue. If I use the Dell slic Windows7 x64 will install fine using the standard VMWare settings however if I use the HP slic it fails with the disk config error and I have to change the VHD to IDE to get it to work. I would not advise using IDE as I found the 7 install took much longet than when in SCSI mode.
Strange indeed..
Could it be that the Dell slic is smaller than the hp slic and the hp slic is overwriting some required part of the bios?

vmware v7 is a great piece of software, but I found it to be a bit heavy on resources, on my PC, so I switched back to earlier (lighter version) .... running OK but sl_ _ _ow is typical of vmware not being given enough ram to run at its best .... or your overall ram and PC specs may just be a bit too lite to run this version very well.
The original vmware-vmx.exe is not replaced with another exe .... the original has its Binres 6006 entry (bios) patched with whatever brand you select ie.asus, dell,hp ... and if you choose 00 is repatched to vm default binres 6006

For some strange reason HP slp 1.0 has always been in vmware bios, i remeber reading this a long while back on virtualization section.
Ohhh, didn't know that.. I always though that is was included with the HP 2.1 Slic..
Strange, because when I put back the original vmx.exe, all of my HP OSes start asking for activation again.. Xp, Vista, and 7..?

Hi guys ... just seen recent posts, I will catch up in the morning.
Been doing minor debugging of batch script, and adding "backup" of vmware-vmx.exe on first run, prior to any patching.
1st post updated, descriptions, and megaupload download link ... still trying to get mediafire link updated LOL.
.... added for "Windows" in description :D

Hello
I've these problems with VMware workstation 7.0.0 build-203739
1) All new VM generated with modded exe doesn't detect HD during installation of O.S (i've tried W7, server 2008, server 2008 R2)
2) if i generate a VM with original exe all work fine, but if i change original exe with modded the VM desn't start.
3) The only way to start a VM with modded exe is that:
- generate and install the O.S. on a new VM (named "A") with original exe
- generate same VM (named "B") with modded exe and replace HD file of VM named "B" with HD file of VM named "A" (you must change filename).
Can anyone help me?

I'm running the same build as you, -7.0.0 build-203739, currently I have VM's of, Xp (32 & 64), Vista Sp2 (32 & 64), Windows 7 Ultimate (32 & 64), Sever 2008 & R2, as well as several Linux builds including Fedora 11 x64 and Ubuntu 9..
All of these VM's were build with a Modded vmx.exe. So far I have not run into the error you have above. But, may I make a few suggestions. 1 - make sure that no part of Vmware is running when you use the patcher to mod the vmx.exe. 2 - If you Upgraded to Vmware 7 from an older version, and did not completely remove the older version first, go back and completely un-install Vmware, then re-install VMware 7. 3 - Make sure, if you have a software firewall installed, that it is not blocking VMware from communicating with your local host, ie: 127.0.0.1. VM's will not start if this communication is blocked.
If you still have the problem, Post the weather you are using VMware 7 in 32 bit or 64 bit, What Windows Host OS you are using and weather it is 32 bit or 64 bit and if possible a few screen shots of the error you are receiving after patching.. By doing the stuff above you can better help searchengine and yourself find were your problem is actually coming from..IE, his patcher or your install of VMware.. As I have said before I have been using searchengine's patcher pretty much since he fixed the 64 bit issues, so far I have had no errors, cross platforms and cross VMware versions. And that's with and average of 20 or more patches a day.. Yes I use it a lot. LOL :)

I've same problem in 2 PC: at home (host Vista x64) and at work (host XP sp3).
i've no error during patch and Vmware is NOT running when you use the patcher.
If i make a new VM with modded exe (HP and MSI), i see this when i install new OS... there isn't HD.
http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/4821/moddedexe.th.jpg (http://img233.imageshack.us/i/moddedexe.jpg/)

After SO installation, if i change original exe with modded exe, i see this... VMware block during startup and i must Power Off the VM.

VMware v7 Problems ...
It seems the recent problem posts all have one thing in common ... vm version 7
If v7.0.0 build-203739 patches and runs successfully for one user, then it makes no sense to cause fault for another. ..at this point I see nothing I can fix, as logic dictates "problems for some" are config/compatiblity related.

it may be a good idea for you to put the above info you have posted in the first post as well. The "VMware v7 Problems" ... and the "Language issue". As a lot of people tend not to read past the first post in a topic. Might save yourself the time in repeating yourself, a lot of people will assume it works with all languages and also will assume that any problems they come across in using VMware after patching it, would be your Patcher's fault....;)
Your logical response is logically sound.. :D

might want to change "%systemdrive%\Program Files\" to "%ProgramFiles%\"
the batch script failed on my customized winxp install where the program files directory is set to "C:\Programs\", also some foreign language installs of windows do not use "Program Files" either
i also have a machine with the program files directory on another partition entirely (aka D:\Program Files\) this would also thoroughly confuse the batch script because its not on the systemdrive at all
edit: before anyone asks why i would do that:
a) because i can, b) i have my reasons

randomchaos26 & highspeedmac .... LOL :D
There are a fair few ways to tell a batch file to select file paths ... but, its not feasible to have an installer look for custom file paths all over the shop for all o/s's (32&64bit).
My interest for this patcher is to have it look for vmx.exe in the 4xlocations on 1st post .... and not any other "paths chosen by user" ... too clumsy to manage.
randomchaos26 "%systemdrive%" checks C-Z (not just C) ... and if I wanted to go all international with file paths I would go pure DOS 8.3 compliant eg. %systemdrive%\PROGRA~1\VMware\VMWARE~1\VMB965~1.EX E .... but I don't, so I wont. :D

Seriously, the only way I could see you having this problem as a result of the Patcher, would be that VMware has updated the vmx.exe file. Changing the structure, which might make the Patch cause errors..
Here is a screen cap of my "VMware-vmx.exe" file Version:

Not Slic'ed after, the vmx.exe on my rig is always modded when I build the VM's. I even build VMs of other Non-MS OSes, with the modded vmx.exe. I receive no errors while doing so..

Yes, I say that, I patch vmware-vmx.exe, then I extract Binres6005. If the file is correcty parched, I should get the BIOS for Linux and I don't.

So does this tool insert a SLIC'd bios version 295 or 314? And if you choose 00 option which "default" bios does it put back? Version 295 from 6.5.3, or 314 from 7? Or did you happen to make it detect what version your running and use the appropriate bios version?
Also, can you choose a bios with both SLIC and SLP?

Restorator Patcher does in fact replace BIOS resource inside the vmware-vmx.exe with existing in the 7zsfx executable VMBios_x32_64_Installer.exe pre-prepared BIOS 2.95 with selection made by the user.
It does NOT do any "magic" of actually patching the BIOS resource itself on-fly

I was led to believe the BIOS was version specific, and would not work in newer versions. I guess not! Or maybe that was true pre-version 7 since 6.5-7 have same hardware? Either way VMware 7 boots fine with BIOS 295 instead of 314.
for the record ... no, of course the 81 resource patchers (70 slp1) + (10 slic2.1) +(1 Default) do not use vm bios version 314 as the source bios files, as vm v7 is hardly released ... and you would be hard pushed to find more than a handfull of vmbios mods on this site or any other, at this time, that use 314 as source (and certainly not a collection of 80).
Anyone who bothered to read any early posts would see, that it was discovered as a bonus that the patchers worked on v7RC ...and subsequently v7Final...no "Magic", except for disregarding what version of exe is being patched, whether x32 or x64bit.

"I have exactly the same issue.
Could it be that the Dell slic is smaller than the hp slic and the hp slic is overwriting some required part of the bios?"
@breeza...
You most likely have a partially uninstalled earlier version, with v7 installed on top resulting in a mix of old and new config folders; vm drivers; and registry entries....resulting in "frankenbuild" version of vmware.
Nope. I installed VMWare 7 on a fresh Windows7 x64 build nothing previously installed.
I haven't given it any more thought as the dell slic works fine.

yeah, that's pretty weird ... I didn't get any IDE/SCSI issue when I tried vm v7; but I'm back on v6.5.3-185404 ... v7 just runs heavy on my PC ... I'm running Win7 Ultimate x32bit host ... I found a new SLP Windows:
There is a nice feature in windows 7: The "XP Mode"
This is a Microsoft Virtual PC 7 with a free Windows XP Image
download link: microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
The integrated product key for this XP is: K49H2-RPR94-QBGG4-DBCTM-YT64G (use google)
With 7z you can extract the file "VirtualXPVHD" from the downloaded WindowsXPMode.exe and rename the VirtualXPVHD to *.vhd
The original name in Windows 7 is "C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode\Windows XP Mode base.vhd"
I converted this "Windows XP Mode base.vhd" to Vmare (with WinImage V8.5) and the XP Windows SP3 runs fine under Vmware.
But this is a SLP Version of Windows for the Microsoft Virtual PC Bios
(under VMware we need a activation)
My Windows 7 runs under VMWARE. You can't run the XP Mode in a virtual machine. It's not possible for me to run the SLIC Dump Toolkit.
Any suggestions?

Yes, My goal is to make the 22 bioses both slic 2.1 and 1.0. I was also wondering which bios to use; 295 or 314. Maybe just make them all. Is there any benefit to the 314 bios?

We do not know, but maybe next Vmware version will not book correctly with 2.95, so I would suggest chaging 3.14, making you future proof
SLIC 2.1 with corresponding SLP 1.0 would be nice
And then the XP mode SLP 1.0 (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=10141) on its own would be pretty much all that most would need in my opinion

(diag deleted for shortness)
I struggled with this same issue and the solution is very simple.
Tested on VMware v7:
Install VMware 7, of course!
Run the XP Mode executable you downloaded from Microsoft (Mine was "WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe") to install it.
In VMware 7, open the "File..." menu. There is a new entry, "Import Windows XP Mode VM". Click that.
Enjoy!
In the new Windows XP Mode VM you just created, you should install the VMware Tools, and uninstall the Virtual PC ones.
Leave the HotFix there, it's related to the transfer of menu entries between Win XP Mode VM and Win7's menu.
Run Microsoft Update! There is a bunch of them to install. I left out IE7 and IE8 however, XP Mode is about compatibility after all...
Martin :)

For this simple way you need a windows 7 installation on your host system.
If you have not Windows7 you can extract the *.vhd from WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe with free 7z (www.7-zip.org)
Can VMware v7 import a *.vhd?
Please run the SLIC Dump Toolkit in your XP machine to get the SLIC strings and post a screenshot.

if you load a SLIC/Cert it checks slic and cert and displays report.
Suicide Solution keeps an updated thread here (on page1)http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=5952 ...and lists all the win 7 Slics and Certs currently leaked, with a download link for all brands.

Sounds like a good Win 7 review... I played around with it while it was in beta and RC but since not much of my software wanted to play along I switched back to Vista... since then most of the software I use has released updates to Win 7 compatibility so I'm about ready to try it again. Too bad I have an Intel motherboard or I'd update the SLIC in the bios from 2.0 to 2.1... I'll just have to use a loader I guess.
Sorry 'bout the cert... for some reason I had it stuck in my mind that it was the .bin for Gateway 2.1 SLIC.

Depends what Intel mobo you have, ones with EFI BIOS are no go. But you could use Intel network card to insert the SLIC (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=8727) (way better than loader IMO)
